Naughty Dogs

Dillon (yes, that's him as my icon) is under house arrest. He had surgery (tplo) for lameness (torn cruciate) in his back leg about a month ago. He was confined to a crate with limited pee breaks for one month. On the first day, he did an impression of prisoners banging the bars with their tin cups. He scraped his cone against the bars and it was effective. The warden (me) couldn't sleep, so I started putting a leash on him and lifting him onto the bed> For a month, I slept with the leash tied around my wrist.

So now, he's under partial house arrest. Crate when unattended. 15 minute walkies allowed. We have caved and have changed "confined to crate" to confined to bedroom or living room. Oh, but Dillon has had it!!! I waltzed him down to the bedroom and took his leash off (he'd been being bad) and he was happy to head to bed. After all it's almost midnight. Then he looked at me and read my mind, that eerie way that dogs do. He dashed out the door, to the kitchen and then looked at the living room door, just daring me to push him into the living room and confine him. I caved. Really, I AM a dog trainer, but there are some fights just not worth it, and remember, Dillon is an Irish dog. Irish. Fighting Irish!!! So, I figured, I'll just lock him into the kitchen. So long as he doesn't do stairs, it's cool just so long as we don't tell the vet, right?

So, the computer is downstairs. The door to downstairs is in the kitchen. We played grab collar, push around on tile floor, scoot, grab collar, push on tile floor, scoot for quite some time! Eventually I held my arm through the threshold, his collar in my hand and closed the door until it started to bite into my flesh. Then I let go of the collar, pulled my arm back and slammed the door. Phew!!! Now I'm here! And that's the best story I have to tell you.

But speaking of stories... the other naughty dog, Pooka, my WIP, is going well. I only got maintenance time with it today, typing and minor edits, but my edits have now gotten me 500 words away from my 84,000 word goal coming down from a completed (but messy) draft of 96,000 words. Yeah me!!! I'm going to read the next two chapters on the chopping block before I go to bed tonight, but might not get much quality time to work on Pooka tomorrow. After all I've got an interview with the coolest kids bookstore in town tomorrow!!!

How are you? And how are your naughty dogs?

pooka, dogs
