Summary: Yamada Riko, formerly Tachibana Riko, was Yamada Ryosuke's childhood friend. When her parents died, the Yamada Family took her in. Now, she has to pretend as Ryosuke's imouto-chan. What future awaits the both of them?
“Riko-chan, hontou daijobu desu ka? That’s like the the 20th time the ball went straight to your face and you just didn’t care!” said her friend Yuna, helping her get back on her feet.
“I’m fine…” said Riko thoughtlessly.
Riko’s class, I-C, was currently on their Physical Education period. The boys were playing basketball while the girls, on the other hand, were playing volleyball. In normal circumstances, Riko is a really enthusiastic player. But as her group mates have guessed, seeing that she barely knows how to hit the ball less avoid it, this day doesn’t count as normal for Riko.
“Riko, snap out of it! What’s really bugging your mind?!” Yuna shouted at her.
Just that question made Riko blushed deep red.
“Nothing…” Riko answered softly.
“Riko, you’re not good at lying,” Yuna sighed exasperatedly. “Ok, I’m not going to ask you anymore but see here Riko, we’re being flattened by the other team. If you don’t concentrate real hard now, we’ll get a seventy for lunch. Do you want that?”
“No, I don’t…” Riko admitted.
“Then get your mind back to the game!”
Yuna went back to her position in front of Riko. As the referee blew his whistle and the ball was served to the other team, Riko tried her best to concentrate. But then, the other team seemed to have made a new strategy to hit the ball towards her. Riko adjusted her position to strike the ball back but then she got a glimpse of her brother, Ryosuke, watching her from the main building. Flashes of what happened yesterday at their house started pouring back in her mind. Riko was very much distracted. The next thing she knew, the ball was in front of her face. She tried to back away but then she stumbled and twisted her ankle.
“Itai!” Riko screamed in pain as she fell to the ground.
“Riko-chan!” Riko heard Yuna shout.
One by one, all the players on the court started to run towards her and enclosed Riko in a small circle.
“Yamada-san, daijobu?” her other friend, Emi, said in concern.
“I’m not…I think I sprained my ankle…” Riko admitted, flinching in pain.
“What are we gonna do?” One said.
“Shall we call the teacher?” Another said in panic.
“No, I’m─” Riko was cut off at the sight of someone.
“Excuse me.”
All the girls were startled to hear a guys’ voice. But then, when they saw who the speaker was, they were even more stunned. Some girls tried to stifle their giggles. The others moved away to make space for him.
Ryosuke walked closer to Riko. He then turned around and crouched down in front of her.
“Hop in, I’ll carry you…” said Ryosuke calmly. Riko looked at him for a while and then averted her gaze to the ground.
“Iya da…” she answered.
Ryosuke looked at her seriously and then sighed. He then pulled both of Riko’s arms and then circled it around his neck.
“What are you doing?!” Riko said aloud.
“Forcing you to ride on my back,” Ryosuke said simply. “Hold on tight.”
When he finally secured Riko’s grip on him, Ryosuke stood up and started to walk towards the infirmary amid the weird and amazed stares.
“Why are you so─!” Riko said, slightly infuriated.
“So what?” Ryosuke said seriously.
“SO ANNOYING!” Riko shouted at his ear.
“Then why are you so stubborn?!” Ryosuke asked in return, irritated.
“Because I was born to be one!”
“Then I’m born to be annoying,” Ryosuke snapped. Riko just grumbled.
“If you won’t stop complaining, I’ll just drop you here,” Ryosuke threatened.
“Fine, do so! I don’t care,” Riko hissed.
Ryosuke suddenly stopped on his tracks. For a moment, Riko actually thought that he will really drop her on the ground. But then, after a while, he continued walking.
“Why? You can’t do it?” Riko challenged.
“I will do it if there’s no one around,” Ryosuke said seriously. “I won’t just let my reputation go to waste.”
“So you’re just thinking of your reputation,” said Riko annoyingly.
“Listen, Riko…why do you hate me so much? I’ve already said my sorry for what happened.”
“You didn’t say it, you wrote it,” Riko retorted.
“Fine, I wrote it,” Ryosuke hissed. “It’s the same thing, anyway. So why are you still angry at me?”
Riko wasn’t able to answer right away. Just before they were in front of the door to the infirmary, Riko spoke.
“I don’t hate you…” Riko said almost inaudibly.
“Riko, I’m really sorry…” Ryosuke answered. “Just forget it. It’ll never happen again. I promise.”
Ryosuke turned his head slightly to the right just for Riko to see him smiling. Riko didn’t know why, but Ryosuke saying sorry to her for everything made her heart ache. It felt like Ryosuke was indirectly saying to her that all of it was just a big mistake he shouldn’t have done in the first place. It’s too frustrating for Riko that she didn’t say anything more.
When Ryosuke opened the door and went inside, it was to find out that no one was there. Ryosuke laid Riko on the nearest bed and sat beside her.
“Are you still okay?” Ryosuke asked in concern.
“Yeah…” Riko answered softly.
“Just stay put for now,” said Ryosuke. “I’ll be with you until the nurse goes back.”
Riko just nodded. She still didn’t know what to say. Looking at Ryosuke, she felt tears fighting to get out of her eyes but she didn’t let them pour out. It would be very obvious that she was hurt if she didn’t control her feelings. After a while of sad thinking and silence, Riko decided that maybe it’s time to let go of whatever she feels for him.
“Ne…arigatou…” Riko said quietly. “Onii-chan…”
Ryosuke turned to look hastily at her with much seriousness. For quite a moment, he just stared at Riko like he wasn’t sure of what he’s going to say or what he’s feeling. But then, Ryosuke suddenly managed to smile a bit.
“You’re always welcome, Riko,” Ryosuke replied. “But you know you don’t have to call me like that when no one’s around.”
“No, that’s not it…” said Riko. “It’s just that I feel like…”
“Like what?”
“Like maybe it was my destiny to live with you. Of course, with okaa-san and otou-san too. Maybe you’re just meant to be my brother. So no matter what, I’ll only think of you as my brother. Ne, onii-chan?”
Riko forced a smile. Ryosuke just stared at her absentmindedly as if he was out of his mind.
“Oh,” Ryosuke mumbled after a while. “I guess, ne…”
Just then the door opened and the nurse walked in. She was quite surprised to see them there.
“Konnichiwa,” Ryosuke greeted the nurse and then lunged into an explanation. “It’s my sister. They were playing volleyball for P.E. and she accidentally twisted an ankle. I brought her here but there wasn’t anyone inside. So I decided to wait with her, just to make sure she’s still doing fine.”
“I see,” the nurse said after a while. “I can handle this. Don’t worry too much about your sister.”
“Arigatou gozaimasu,” Ryosuke smiled. “Then, I’ll be going back now to my class. Please take care of her.”
Ryosuke then faced Riko.
“Jaa, Riko, see you later.”
“Un.” Riko nodded.
When the door closed behind him, the nurse started working on her ankle and Riko just started crying.
“I know it hurts a lot, honey,” the nurse comforted her. “Just hold on.”
“Yeah…” said Riko, crying her heart out and she knew it got nothing to do with the physical pain. “It hurts…a lot…”
----------------------------------------------
Riko spent the rest of the day at the infirmary partly because the nurse thinks she would just hurt herself even more if she tried walking and walking. Riko was more than glad to comply with the nurse’s wish. She took a small nap just to rest her mind and forget all her problems.
By the end of school, Riko was surprised to see Chinen at the infirmary.
“Feeling all good, Riko-chan?” asked Chinen with his usual cute smile.
“I guess so,” Riko smiled back. “Why are you here Chinen-kun?”
“Am I not allowed to visit you?” He pouted.
“Eh? No, that’s not what I mean, I─” Riko quickly amended. Chinen chuckled.
“I know what you mean,” Chinen beamed. “I just wanted to tell you that Ryo-kun went home already.”
“Ah…” said Riko, slightly crestfallen. “Souka…”
Chinen went to sit beside her.
“It’s quite irresponsible of him to just leave you behind when you’re injured,” said Chinen seriously.
“Maa, I guess it’s okay…” Riko admitted. “I’m not ready to see him yet.”
“Nande? Did you fight with him?” asked Chinen curiously.
“It’s not like that…it’s just that…well…we had a little misunderstanding…” said Riko quietly. “But I guess I’ve already fixed it. It’s just difficult.”
“Sou…” said Chinen.
They went silent for a few seconds and then Riko faced Chinen.
“Ne, Chinen-kun…”
“Hmmm…?”
“Will it be okay…eto…could you bring me home?” asked Riko.
Chinen smiled warmly at her and held her left hand.
“I guess that’s the reason why I am here.”
