Eilonwy
I never realized how much meaning is in our future daughter's name. Never having read the series of books by Lloyd Alexander I did not realize Eilonwy was a tomboy, sorceress, whose physical description is a lot like mine. She's sarcastic, opinionated, yet sensitive. Hmm...
"I realized recently that a major reason I never gave in to the belief that a girl's ambition should be to fit in with the crowd, marry well, have lots of kids, and run a nice household was that I surrounded myself with books from a young age. Surrounded by heroines such as Eilonwy, girls and women who stood up to the forces of evil and rescued the heroes just as much as the heroes rescued them, how could I not believe that women could be just as good as men? Eilonwy in particular was always a lovely example of who I wanted to be: smart, pretty, didn't faint once in the course of five books, compassionate, didn't make a fool of herself by sighing and pining when she was in love, a sorceress, and someone who valued character more than rank or money." Clearly, I'd better get to Barnes and Noble. And I'm completely convinced, 5+ years before we do this that this is the perfect name. Now if I just had an equally good, yet short, middle name.
