One day in the late summer, there was a recently divorced woman with 2 kids under the age of 6 walking through the parking lot of the hospital where she worked. Across the lot, she spotted a doctor walking through the doors and said to herself, "I'm going to marry that man..." and went on her way. She was a nurse at the same hospital in the ICU, but only vaguely knew the man she saw. Later that month, she saw him again with his 3 kids making a huge mess in the ice cream shop where she happenned to be going out on a date with another man. She didn't really think anything about it, just thought maybe he should get some help, and went along with her date:-) A couple months later, she was working her evening shift at the hospital on Halloween, while the rest of her co-workers who were off for the night enjoyed a party. During some lulls in the night, she would prank call the party to ask for "Burt" and act irate when the person said there was no one there by that name, and proceed to insist that he was there, shortly before hanging up. After calling multiple times, her friends caught up with the game and prepared their revenge. When she arrived at the party later that night, she was promptly shoved in a closet and was told "Here's Burt!!!!!!!". In the dark closet, someone kissed her. She had showed up as a "Chiquita Bananna" and the kiss came from a man who had a gorilla mask. The man was slightly tipsy, and was actually there with a date, but it turned out to be the same man she saw from across the parking lot.
Within a 3 days of the party, the man had dumped his date and was now courting the woman. Their first date at an airport bar was almost a complete flop. But contrary to all evidence, their chemistry was amazing. There was definately love in the air, and no one at the hospital was supposed to know, but rumors flew. The doctor was actually cheif of staff, and she was just a nurse- people suspected her of just wanting his money, or abusing power. So many things happenned in the next month....and by the end of the year, they were happily married. They "dated" for about 6 weeks. No real engagement- he later gave her a wooden ring, but there was nothing official. The wedding was small and the wedding party was almost bigger than the amount of people in attendance. Their honeymoon was two days in a motel they drove to on the coast, less than a couple hours away. People still mumbled about the marriage, but they just pretended not to hear. The next year was full of adjustments with the living arrangements with the kids, dealing with the ex-wife, attempting to appease the in-laws, and trying to maintain a normal life.
More than 30 years later, these people are still married. And they're my parents:-) My mom says she looks at him some point in every day and says "My goodness, I love that man!" And though my dad would never say anything mushy, he calls her multiple times a day from work to check on her day. They are happily married and provided such a great environment to grow up in for all my family. I know this isn't relevant, but I just thought it should be documented in some way. I finally got a dateline on some of these stories, so I just thought it'd be fun to share. It was like Grey's Anatomy....but with kids and in real life! I love my parents:-)
