So I'm mostly doing this for me to refresh my memory on the basics, but I'd thought I'd post this here. If you want a really detailed and up to date guide on canon Cameron Mitchell, you can go
here.
Cameron in canon
Cameron Mitchell is a young character on the stargate series so his background is still pretty limited. When I started first playing him on FH, there was only half a season to base myself on and that half neglected the character sorely. The second half made up for it, but as a result I have had to deviate from canon with some things to try to encompass the new information. I console myself however that I managed to get his characterisation down pretty well and had moments while watching the new episodes and went 'See? That's my boy!' Anyway...
Cameron was an F-16 fighter pilot who got cleared for the F-302 program. He was commander of his own squadron but crashed during the battle against Anubis over Antartica. His co-pilot died in the crash and Cameron came out unable to use his legs. When O'Neill promised him that he could get any position in the USAF if he recovered, Cameron pushed himself and was able to fully recover. He took O'Neill's proposal serious and asked to be allowed to join the best, namely SG-1. Big was his disappointment when he found out that the original SG-1 was dismanteled and he was getting command of new SG-1. He didn't want command, he just wanted to work together with those he admired. Cameron however is not someone who gives up easily once he has something in mind and after a lot of pushing and cajoling, he managed to convince all former team members to return and work with him.
Characterisation: canon vs FH
When we first meet Cameron on SG, we see a Colonel who plays by the rules and doesn't easily give up. He does his homework (seems to have read all SG-1's mission files and knows even the smallest details by heart), listens to those under his command and is happy to stand back and learn. As the season went on, we got to see a different side to him. His sense of humour was further developed, he loosened up a bit but still seems reluctant to really take control over a group of people who he admires. We learned that while he is optimistic, he does have a darker side to him. Cameron carries a lot of guilt with him even if he isn't directly responsible for it all. He cuts himself short and thinks other people are just better than him. He's acutely aware that he's got a temper, that he ends up acting rashly and that it has brought other people into trouble. This is part of why he tries to keep himself so much under control. He doesn't like his temper at all and seems to struggle with it.
It amuses me that teenage Cameron had pretty much undergone the same evolution as his canon version. When he first showed up, he was very much a boyscout and in a lot of ways he still is. However, he's gotten more comfortable around people here and has really loosened up. He's a playful character and just as optimistic and bouncy as his adult self. As things have happened to him, he's however also starting to learn about that darker side of him. He'll act rashly when he believes those he cares about are being endangered or wronged. He's still to learn how to control himself, though. On a lighter note, he's inherited a love for food and cooking from canon. He's set his mind on becoming a pilot and he'll do anything to get there.
FH canon
Things happen to him? Yeah, they really do. I've slammed him a lot this year, some if it intentional, the other part just happened. He's proven to be hard to break even if I came damn close to it at some point. So what has happened to him?
- In a stupid prank war between Parker and Crichton, Cameron was made to believe he was Crichton by some mindfrel courtesy Drusilla.
- When Janet was taken over by the goa'uld Hathor, Cameron was put under the influence of her pheromones and served as her minion. He ended up hurting his friends but has no recollection of this except what he was told.
- He was dragged into locker 327 and lived through the battle over Antartica. Digging deeper into this, he found out that in an AU, his adult version ends up going MIA after crashing there.
- His father (a test pilot for the USAF) crashed his plane and lost the use of both his legs. (This was to compensate with new canon information where his father actually crashed when Cameron was only 10 years old.)
- After finding an Ancient communication stone, Cameron got possessed by a prior. He himself ended up on the other side of the galaxy and met the Ori. They mindwhammied him and showed him a possible future in which he ends up being responsible for the death of most of his friends.
So yes, stuff happens to him because I'm evil like that.
Interacting with Cameron
This is really easy. I try to put him out there as much as I can. Cameron is easy to talk to. He's friendly (unless you're an ass) and very open. He's a huge dork, but he's also a good friend if you need him to be. Sometimes he's a bit of an idiot and does stupid things that get him into trouble. He can be found in the gym a lot as he insists on staying fit (which is necessary for him to get into the USAF Academy). He might be pretty vocal about his love for the 2nd floor and the Stickbugs, but this is just for fun and to get a bit of a rile out of people. He just likes teasing.
So this is way too long and I'm pretty sure I still left things out. Cookies for anyone who actually read this!
Short version: Cameron is a dork. He's silly most of the time, but he's a fighter and will stand up for his friends and do what he believes is the right thing.
