Beka scrubs a hand through her hair. "It wasn't supposed to be like this. I don't know how it was supposed to be. But not like this. If you don't believe anything else, believe that."
"It's complicated, Cam. I'm trying to sort it all out."
She paces.
"Crichton pulled that nasty trick on Parker. Then Parker wanted revenge. Being Parker," she laughs harshly, but not at Parker. "She couldn't do it the old-fashioned way.
"There was this plan. To switch you and Crichton. You were supposed to be drugged and hypnotized and innocently going along with it. Crichton was supposed to know he was himself, and everyone was supposed to call him Cam."
Cam listened to what Beka had to say for a moment, then shook his head. "Wait, you're trying to tell me that Crichton pulled a stupid prank on Parker and to get back she decided to get me drugged and make me think I'm Crichton? And you went along with this?"
She winces. "No. That's how it got complicated. I knew that in order for Parker to have her revenge, and you not to get hurt, I had to be involved. She was going to do it with or without me.
"It seemed harmless. But then the deeper we got into it. The others kept... I decided that the best thing would be for me and Aeryn to switch places. So we could stay near you and Crichton.
"You have to believe that I did that to keep them from hurting you. And to be with you."
"We wouldn't have hurt him," Parker spoke up, stung. "We're not incompetent, for Christ's sake. 24 hours as someone else is an experience some people pay for."
Parker rolls her eyes at this, since she'd seen this coming and thought Sun and Valentine were prepared for the consequences (with sex or good stories or other bribes), but then, they were 'in love' with the two idiots. Parker never had that difficulty.
She kept her mouth shut out of deference to Valentine's regrets, though. No reason to make the girl suffer any more than she already was.

He raised an eyebrow at the rest of Beka's explanation. "Oh yeah, I'm suppose it says enough if this how you're supposed to get my back."

But it had been necessary. Ther was too much riding on self-preservation at this school, to let Crichton's joke become a standing matter for hilarity.
"Okay, Mitchell. You got me there. So. For what it's worth: I'm. Sorry." Parker looks away. "It won't happen again."

"I don't know. I heard about it. Parker's a friend. What he did to her was wrong. I wanted to help her.
"You know me. Always with the getting people's back." She looks tired and sad and bitter. "Always with the getting in trouble."
