P2X-623 - 15:00 PMT

There were no vampires, weird dreams or alternative universes in sight where Cameron was. (Okay, so maybe the alternative universes thing wasn't that far a stretch and the weird dreams happened, but anyway.) Everything was perfectly normal. If by normal you meant having the huge space ship you were training on break down when entering a solar ( Read more... )

Sam was dressed in a way she hadn't been in a while--BDUs, hair tied back, pack loaded with scientific equipment and clean socks, and a loaded P-90 in her hands. She scanned the area for hidden dangers, and if asked would vehemently deny that she was also making sure that a certain flyboy was still in the one piece he'd been in when he left.

Not that she wasn't aware that was what she was doing, but she also knew how explosions worked, and injuries were common. Once she'd spotted Cameron, she gave him a quick nod before turning to the Marine in Charge. "I hear you guys need a couple of mechanics."

"You heard right," the MiC replied. "I'm personally getting tired of eating salads, so you couldn't have come at a better time. We figured it'd speed things up if we actually picked you up."

He motioned towards the Al'kesh in invitation.

"You're all been eating salads?" Sam tried to cover her smirk as she motioned the rest of her team to precede her onto the Al'kesh. "If I'd known that, I would have brought some other foods with me."

"Explain to me what happened, please?" She'd get the full story again, and speak to the on board engineers while she was at it, but it never hurt to get as many impressions as possible. "Was anyone injured?"

"What I heard is that some of the core blew when we dropped out of lightspeed," the marine started walking back to the ship. "Two of the mechanics got some mild burns but no one was seriously injured at least. Most of the power's been diverted to the life support systems so we don't have enough juice to get the Prometheus anywhere. Let alone to defend ourselves if we get discovered by the goa'uld. Which is why Colonel Pendergast asked for backup to fix this faster."

Cameron was looking back into the cargohold, but he stayed on his post at the controls. Even if he felt eager to see Sam, but then he'd seen her a few days ago so it was silly to be eager. Right? Right. Mind with the controls, which included closing the cargo door so he was allowed to look back.

"Hmm," Sam considered, mind already racing with possibilities. First thing would have to be a diagnostic, but after that, getting shields up would have to be a priority. "I don't suppose laying low's really an option in this part of the galaxy, either. We'll do the best we can, but a blown core, well..."

They'd probably have to gerryrig something until they could get back to Earth. She already started running through whether there was anything on the Al'kesh that she could utilize.

Scanning the ship as she followed the marine, she grinned when she saw Cameron at his post and felt something between her shoulders start to relax.

"Well, we have some power so hopefully it's not the whole thing," he said, sounding confused like most soldiers did when it was required to think about doohickeys (even ones as big as a core). "They'll be able to give you a better explanation up there."

Cameron grinned and maybe he was mostly looking at Sam and not so much at the Major. "Everybody in?" he asked.

"Everybody in," Heinrich cofirmed. "Take us off, Mitchell."

"Watch the engines," Sam called over to Cameron with a grin. "We just got her washed."

"I'm always gentle," Cameron assured her as he turned back to face the controls. The cargo hold shut with a hiss and Cameron wasted no time getting the Al'kesh off the ground.

A bright blush suddenly bloomed on Sam's cheeks, but she didn't contradict him. "Any handling problems you've seen so far?"

He wasn't looking at her, otherwise he might have enjoyed the blush but he might have been imagining it. "Except that she's not an F-302?" he asked and he shook his head. "She's flying fine. Not a hitch yet."

They were climbing up higher, the trees beneath had become a sea of green and the sky above was turning a deeper kind of blue as here and there stars appeared. Cameron liked this part best of all, even if he missed the swooping feeling you got in a fighter plane.

"That's good to know," she said, dropping her pack to the floor and digging for her notebook and pen. "Maybe it's not as bad as we think."

Considering as bad as Sam thought involved a total core meltdown and being blown up by the Goa'uld instead of dying a horribly slow death of radiation poisoning, that was probably good. "She still driving like a land barge?"

They'd been working on that, but a large spaceship needed a little heft to it, so you remembered you weren't flying a fighter jet, so there was only so far she wanted to tweak it.

She dug into her pack again and started rummaging for her tools.

"Pretty much, but that's kind of what you expect for a ship that size," he said pretty much what she had been thinking. "Maybe it's a matter of getting used to it."

"It's definitely got a learning curve, but you should be able to deal with it without much of a problem," she conceded, confident as usual in his flying abilities. "No other problems? No invasions or anything like that?"

She felt better knowing it was her own technological ineptitude that was causing the problem here.
