[Rydia enters sometime in the afternoon, with a bag of groceries. She hums to herself...then pauses, staring at the balloons.

...well, this is festive! What's the occasion?

[A little confused, since there seem to be several. Fortieth birthday, what?]

[More green hair! How did she ever miss this? She pops up and holds out her hand to Rydia.]

I wanted to help. I thought it would make the Welcome Center welcoming. My name's Cameron.

[She smiles and shakes the hand. Not used to doing it but hey, why not.]

You're right, it does. I'm Rydia of Mist, one of the regular volunteers.

Mist: water in the form of particles floating or falling in the atmosphere at or near the surface of the earth and approaching the form of rain; something that obscures understanding; a film before the eyes; a cloud of small particles or objects suggestive of a mist; a suspension of a finely divided liquid in a gas; a fine spray; a drink of liquor served over cracked ice.

You don't look like any of these.

[Rydia blinks, a bit surprised at the long-winded description.]

It's the name of my town, which is named for its guardian--a dragon of mist.

...I'm not sure if that explanation helped.

Oh! I understand. Thank you for explaining.

...Is it a real dragon?

More or less, yes. It's a dragon and an Eidolon, a summonable being.

[She moves to set down the bag of groceries, since they're getting heavy.]

I'm glad for any help we can get around here. The first half of the month is usually so busy with all the new people.

[Cameron's eyes (and head) track Rydia's movements down and back up without missing a beat]

I've noticed. The population jumps each month. But people seem to disappear at any time.

I've tried to see a pattern for that too, but long ago realized that there's just not telling. Oh, well. The people that are taken outside of Luceit are beyond our help, so I'll just focus on what can be done.

It's a good idea. Logical.

[she smiles, then looks back down at the bag of groceries Rydia had been carry]

I've been keeping you from something. Can I help?

[Rydia glanced over to the bag and then to Cameron with a sheepish smile.]

Of course! I suppose we can talk and be productive at the same time.

[She lifts the bag and carries it into the kitchen. Time to sort things.]

I've learned that it's always a good idea to bring in extra supplies at any time. You never know when it will be needed, and it all goes so fast.

[she would have picked it up for Rydia, but she doesn't offer after Rydia does so herself, so she just follows gamely and tries to comment--she doesn't really have an exacting measurement of how much people can eat... humans around her tended to be on short commons or, well, robots]

There are a lot of people showing up lately. And the food will spoil quickly. Iceboxes are primitive forms of refridgeration. Uncertain temperatures might lead to faster decomposition.

Primitive?

[She doesn't sound offended--curious, if anything. Quickly, she takes the food out of the bag and sets it on the counter.]

Honestly, this is more advanced than what I have at home. And you're right, some things could spoil, but at least here, food keeps appearing when we need it. We don't have to worry about what to do if that happens.

[and Cameron would have been completely unapologetic if she were... she wouldn't have really understood where the offense stemmed from]

In my world, this is old. Reliable electricity generation, economies of scale, superior material production led to colder temperatures, steadier levels.

[she tips her head as she simply watched Rydia take out the food, not quite knowing if there is anything she should do] Do people ever worry about relying on the Malnosso? Has there ever been an experiment where the food does not appear?

[That idea has been one of Rydia's worries and it shows as she winces.]

As far as I know that hasn't happened yet, but that doesn't mean it won't. It would be just like them to conjure up something that horrible. I haven't seen our extreme reliance mentioned often, but that doesn't mean people don't worry about it. There was a man who made a survey about various practical skills, just in case we'd suddenly need to rely on them. That probably needs an update by now, but it's still a good effort.

It was a good beginning. Many things happen because of good beginnings.

[she picks up a tomato from the pile of things Rydia is putting away] Do we have gardeners?
