Summary: Claire has a present for Becky, a show of affection.

Becky slumped down in her bed, dragging the sheet up over her, sighing loudly. A long day of drenching in thirty degree weather had pushed them all to the limit, and Becky had relished the cold shower when they had finally finished work well after dark. She was trying to plan the next day’s yard work, but she couldn’t fight her drooping eyelids. But when her door banged open, she was sitting in a second, rubbing her eyes and staring blinkingly up at Claire.

“What is it? What’s happened?” Becky asked, trying to fight the fog of sleep, while already reaching for her hat.

“What? Oh, nothing.” Claire waved a hand, stopping Becky from getting up. “I just wanted to..ah…” She paused, pursing her lips, and Becky held back a little smirk at expression. She loved seeing Claire’s face when she was thinking, or about to say something nice.

Becky tugged the sheet a little closer around herself, looking up at Claire as she continued to scowl for a moment before she opened her mouth. “The buckskin gelding, the one from Blaze’s herd - out of Sir Rocco - he’s yours.” Claire let out in a rush, and it took Becky a second to process it.

“Wha-”

Claire shook her head, placing her hands on her hips, glancing around the small room. “No, no. I want you to have him. Buddy’s getting older, and he’ll need to be retired soon. I know you’ve had your eye on that gelding since I brought that herd in. You can train him up, I’ll give you a hand, and then he’ll be yours. Good and proper.” Claire finished with a nod, clearly happy with her decision, as well as herself for having the guts to say it.

Becky couldn’t help the smile that broke on her face. Claire wasn’t one for showing gestures of affection, Tess had found that out many times. The fact that she had even thought of this meant a lot to Becky.

“Claire…I..I don’t know what to say.”

“Yeah, well. Nothing to say, really. It’s practical.” Claire nodded again, face returning to its usual expression, and Becky beamed. With that, Claire turned on her heels, striding out of the quarters, leaving Becky to her own happiness.

Becky leaned against the fence, watching the buckskin gelding as he trotted briskly around the yard. He moved smoothly, and Becky could clearly see the resemblance of the movement to Blaze’s. She smiled, imagining herself on the gelding, riding next to Claire on the palomino mare. It was a silly dream, but that’s what dreams were for.

She slipped through the fence slowly, halter and lead rope hanging in one hand. The gelding paused, eyeing her as she moved closer, tossing his head.

“Shhh. Shhh. Settle down boy.” She cooed softly, holding the rope behind her back as she stepped forward. The gelding stepped back as she did, mirroring her, and she hummed. He paced around her, keeping his eye trained on her as he circled. Becky kept her eyes lowered, following the gelding until he stopped, letting her approach slowly. She ran a hand down his neck, and he tossed his head but didn’t move as he let her slip the halter over his muzzle and tie it at his cheek. He pulled back, feeling the restraint, eyes rolling in disapproval.

Becky had watched Claire do this many times, and she kept the rope slack, enough so that the gelding could pace a little, to know he wasn’t trapped. After a few moments getting used to the feel, he settled again and Becky smiled, resting her cheek on his neck and breathing in deeply. He smelled like dust, hay, and the scent that was distinct to horses. But he wasn’t just any horse. He was her horse. Claire had made sure of that. She smiled, kissing his mane.

“Good boy, Shining. Good boy.”

For a second Becky stiffened, flashing back to her old life. The position reminds her of the naive barmaid, letting the guys run their hands over her hips as they guide her arm with the pool cue. But this isn’t a game of pool, and Claire isn’t those guys. And Becky isn’t that girl any more.

She relaxed, well, as much as she could with Claire so teasingly close, and let Claire steer her hand holding the rope after Shining.

“Keep him moving.” Claire spoke softly in her ear. “You don’t want him to have time to think of anything else, except you.”

Becky nodded, trying to decide whether to pay attention to the gelding or to the fact that Claire was pressed up against her back. It was hard to choose which one was more important. Shining snorted and Becky sighed, smiling as she turned her attention back to the horse.

“Steady him up. Bring him back down to a slower trot. Don’t let him get ahead of himself.” Claire instructed, letting go of Becky’s hand and giving her a nudge.

“Yeah, alright. I got it.” She gave the rope a flick, and Shining trotted on.

“Hey, hey!” Claire snatched Becky’s arm, frowning. “What’d I just say? Don’t push him, or he’ll push back. You can ruin a horse that way.”

Becky spun to face Claire, glaring at the hand still on her arm. “I’m not going to ruin him.”

Claire huffed. “You sure about th-”

Becky stepped closer, leaning up to kiss Claire on the lips. She felt Claire protest, just for a second, before she began to return the kiss. Becky ran a hand up Claire’s back, humming at the feel of dirt and grit on the woman’s shirt under her hand.

Shining whinnied, and the pair broke away, turning attention back to the horse once more.

“So,” Becky pressed back into Claire, looking up over her shoulder with a soft, cheeky smile. “How did you say it was done again?” Claire looked amused, raising an eyebrow before reaching around to take Becky’s hand.

“Slowly.”
