The start of this week was fantastic! But it went downhill very quickly.
Me and Ally are no longer together, for reasons that I have yet to completely understand. It definitely came out of no where and broadsided me. A lot of things going through my mind.
Life goes on.
On Monday, my dad and I flew to the Daytona Beach campus of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University! ERAU is like the Harvard or the Jilliard of aviation. It was so much fun! It cleared up a lot of cloudiness that was present in my thoughts about college. I took pictures too.
Taking off from our home FBO at 7:00am.
When we were climbing, about 200 feet, we could see the sunrise. It was beautiful!
We opened our flight plan and tried to start on our way to Daytona, but the morning fog was too dense and we had to turn around and wait it out on the ground.
About 10:00am, the weather stations were reporting better visibility, so we left for Daytona. The flight was really smooth. We were cleared through Orlando International's airspace and it was pretty uneventful. If it can be seen through the love-bug smears on the windshield, Daytona International was right ahead.
The air traffic controllers told us to land on runway 7L. We were lined up and right before we started getting ready for landing the controllers tell us to land on runway 7R, which was next to it. Luckily we could just move to the right and had plenty of time.
After my adventures in Daytona, we took off and I could see Daytona Beach and the Atlantic Ocean. It was awesome!
The ERAU campus is right next to the airport. They use Cessnas, single and twin engine Pipers. Those aircraft reminded me a little of Driver Ed cars. But they have a No Discrepancy policy where if the smallest thing is wrong with the plane, nobody flies it until it's fixed.
The Daytona International Speedway is right next to the airport too.
Flying right under the clouds is so cool!
A last look at Daytona before we head home.
Instrument panel!
The flight back was incredible smooth and quiet. After we got out of the Daytona area, which has some of the busiest airspace in the world, it was nice just to chill out and enjoy the view.
We got to see the sunset on the Gulf coast at 4,500 feet in the air.
I thought that these pictures were really beautiful.
Summer Florida sunset at 4,500 feet.
Daytona Adventures: When we landed, we taxied to Lynch Corporate Services ramp. When we parked where they told us to, they put a little doormat by the pilot's door. "We've been expecting you," they said. Me and my dad were offered us cool water and rental vehicles. It was like we were some big stars flying in on a corporate jet, but we were just two guys in a Cessna.
We got the rental car, which smokers had driven before, and hit the town. Grabbed something to eat and toured where my dad lived when he went to ERAU. It was neat seeing the apartment that he lived in during his college years.
We finally got to ERAU and visited the bookstore. It was more like a gift shop. I got a shirt and looked at all of the other cool stuff that I wish I could get. We went to the campus visit office and started a tour.
We went around and looked at all of the halls and classrooms. We saw the labs and simulators they use to train students. They were Very Impressive! We also looked at the dorms, one was like a traditional dorm building and the others were more like motels. The freshman are required to live on-campus, probably so you can make new friends and get used to things.
After the tour, I had a admissions conference with Keith, one of the counselors. He explained everything to me and how things work at ERAU. I got a crap load of papers to look through and a course catalog. He answered all of my questions, and all of the cloudiness that was surrounding my thoughts about college went away. The annual tuition is only about $44,000 with flight training.
We left and went back to the airport.
