Um. Merlin knows that this has to have happened before, in the other universe, without him there, and that Arthur clearly survived it last time, yes? Unless it was directly or indirectly caused by Merlin, which would be very strange and which he has no reason to assume.

Sounds just like Merlin rush off to risk discovery disregarding (good) reason(s) to save someone's life. :D

Then, again he is looking to prevent a terrible war in which Arthur plays key role. Making sure this isn't a reason or catalyst for a war can't hurt, right?
