Merlin Ep 5 Review
Merlin 4x05 - His Father's Son
SPOILERS FOR S4 SO FAR & FUTURE EPS
OK so I didn't review last week because without Gwen I was far too disappointed. I thought this ep would go the same way but I very plesantly surprised. There was actual character/storyline development.
Last week we were disappointed that the Gwen/Arthur love wasn't addressed now that he's king but this week we finally got it and I was actually quite impressed with the development on all fronts.
Alright, opening scene. Can I just Merls as a knight - very handsome.
"That was the idea."
Arthur's otp epic jump though just made me laugh.
Agravaine just pissed me off right from the start but I suppose that's the idea.
EVIL!!
Bradley's acting with the whole self-doubt twist was spot on though and the dynamic between him & Colin really hit the mark this ep.
Oh Arthur don't listen to meany uncle. You ARE a better king than Uther.
One thing I love though is this led to some great Merls as an advisor stuff. The first one by the fire with Merls telling Arthur to be merciful was very well shot and suberbly acted.
"I can only follow his example & do as he would have done."
But bloody hell, I was screaming at the screen "DAMN IT ARTHUR! IT'S A GOOD THING THAT YOUR NOTHING LIKE UTHER!!"
Awww Arwen reuinte scene was uber cute. So simple but soo adorable.
PERFECTION!
I like Merls be Arthur's conscience, even if he was snippy and didn't listen.
"So you don't regret what you did?"
Whoever played Queen Annis was very good. I liked her and her grief was understandable.
"All of Camelot will pay!"
Yay acknowledgment that Arthur wants Gwen as his Queen!!! Screw you Aggy!!! One thing I didn't like. Arthur always refused to let anyone talk him out of being with Gwen, even Uther but wham bam one convo with Aggy. I get that he's King now and Aggy's playing on his love for the kingdom and it was believable but as a fan of gwen and a woman it hurt me :(
And as if the people wouldfn't absolutely love the idea of a commoner as their Queen, man I hate you Aggy!!

Well done to Katie. Playing new bitter, twisted Morgana isn't easier but I actually perfer her this ep. She's toned the smirking down a bit and going with the broody, scorned woman. I like it.

Oh, Gwen so happy and girly to see him! They've toned down her make-up. I like that, she's so pretty, looks so young (I still can't believe Angel's in her thirties) Awww her disappointment as it dawns on her what he's saying and when she asks him if he's ashamed just broke my heart.

And though I hated what he was doing, the pain in Arthur's face was so well acted I felt sorry for him.
The Angst
The scene was also filmed very well, the distance between them when usually they're so close, the setting etc.
Despite Arthur breaking her heart, Gwen still managed to give him the best piece of advice of the whole ep! God I love her!
"You said you are your own man, you have a good heart, be true to it. Only then will you be the King you want to be."
Awww Gwen/Gaius I love their little scenes together.
"I do know that but I'm not sure he does."
I very glad Arthur was able to admit he'd mmade the wrong decision. It show great character growth.
"I'm made the wrong decision and now I have brought this war upon Camelot myself."
Oh, Arthur now your finally being the noble king I've been waiting for yayyy!
Awww leaving his mother ring for Gwen!!! I squeed so much!
"Tell her that I'm sorry."
And awww Merls is his old friend :) Yayyy he spared the giant's life yayyy! And the knight's all clapping! I was grinning like a maniac!
Heroicly Merciful
I knew I liked that Queen for a reason :D and she's right Morgs is the one who's like Uther!
"You are more like Uther than you realise."
Man Gwen & Arthur are cute! His pathetic flowers lol and the way he slowly steps towards her! It was all just perfect!
"I picked them on the side of a road."
Next week.
I still hope Gwen is instramental in stopping Merls
And as much as I try, I cant understand how old Merls fits in. Unless it's another Morgs vision. Or while being sexily tortured Merls learns that Morgs fears old Emerys so he decides to mess wiith her head. Hehe bad thoughts went through my head when she tipped water on him.
