"Merlin" Introduces Bad Boy Flirtatious Future Knight to the Mix

Expert swordsman Gwaine, a pivotal player in future King Arthur's Round Table, is introduced in tonight's episode of Merlin, as a recurring character.

So far in Merlin, all of our ‘heroes’ have been stand-up good guys, doing the right thing and upholding the standards of chivalry, while showing respect for women and the elderly. Hence, it isn’t surprising that The Powers That Be would want to introduce a charming bad boy into the mix, who will drink and brawl and flirt impudently with the ladies, but who still has a heart of gold that will eventually gain him a seat as a Knight of the Round Table. Enter Gwaine, the mischievous enigmatic swordsman who comes to the aid of Merlin (Colin Morgan) and Arthur (Bradley James) when our prince and warlock are vastly outnumbered in a tavern brawl. This all-new episode, appropriately called “Gwaine,” premieres Friday, February 4 at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT on Syfy.
The Flirtatious Future Knight

In the process of risking his life to protect Arthur, Gwaine is seriously wounded. Arthur takes him back to Camelot, where under the care of such a superb physician as Gaius (Richard Wilson), Gwaine quickly heals. But that just unleashes Gwaine’s intrinsic bad boy as he sets about drinking, charming the ladies, and causing trouble for Merlin. Until his quickness to brawl earns him a decree of execution from King Uther. However, since the thugs Gwaine dispatches have come to kill the Prince, Arthur convinces his father to stay the execution to mere banishment.

However, this is not the end of Gwaine in Camelot, for there is more deceit, danger and betrayal afoot. In the clip provided by Syfy, we see Gwaine take on two unscrupulous Knights who are about to dispatch Merlin, under the guise that Merlin is a thief rather than the manservant who is going to arrange the bed clothes. And once again, Merlin and Gwaine have to work together to prevent a plot on Arthur’s life.

Eoin Macken Brings Model Background

Gwaine is portrayed by Eoin Macken, an Irish actor who became famous as a male model for Ralph Lauren, Braun and GQ magazine, as well as the featured face of Abercrombie & Fitch in 2003. Hence, Angel Coulby enjoyed playing the flirtation between Gwen and Gwaine opposite Macken.

“Everybody knew of his modeling - because somebody put up a picture of him in the production office for all of us to see,” Coulby says with a snicker. “I think a little flirtation for Gwen is good - it keeps Arthur on his toes. And Eoin is really easy and fun to work with, and very professional. I enjoyed the scenes we have together.”

However, since Gwaine is based on the Arthurian legendary character Sir Gawain who was known to be a friend of the poor, this recurring character will demonstrate a low opinion of nobility, while still upholding chivalry and honor.

Also known on the film festival circuit for his directing of the well-regarded short Dreaming For You in America and the feature film, Christian Blake, in Ireland, Eoin Macken should prove to be a popular addition to the circle of Merlin characters.

Once again, the Merlin episode “Gwaine” premieres Friday, February 4 at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT on Syfy.
