Syfy has announced the date that the UK fantasy drama series Merlin will return to the broadcaster for its third series. The popular BBC series will return to Syfy on Friday 7th January at 10pm. The first series of Merlin in America aired on NBC but Syfy acquired the US rights to the second series - airing it earlier this year. The second series of Merlin proved to be something of a hit for Syfy which quickly picked up the rights for the third series.

The third series of Merlin is currently airing on BBC One on Saturday evenings although its nearing the end of its run now. A fourth series has already been ordered by the BBC but it has been cut down to 10 episodes instead of the usual 13. Several reasons have been speculated for the reduced episode order ranging from budget cuts within the BBC or to avoid schedule conflicts with Doctor Who. The sixth series of Doctor Who will be spilt across next year with the first half of the season airing in the Spring and the second in the Autumn - Merlin’s traditional slot.
