Arthur stood by what was left of the pile of burn wood. It hadn’t been that long that Merlin had stood in the middle of that pile, flames surrounding him and now there wasn’t anything left but a few ashes left in its awake. He didn’t turn when he heard the soft steps behind him, he already knew who it was.
“I’m sorry, Arthur.” A hand was place gently on his shoulder, as if the owner was waiting to be rejected.
And how Arthur wanted to shrug that hand away, it was Gaius fault, wasn’t it? Gaius had let himself be enchanted by that stupid goblin. No, he couldn’t blame Gaius, it wasn’t the man’s fault after all and he knew Merlin wouldn’t had been happy with that.
He put his hand over Gaius one, “I know.” Is all he said as he squeeze it gently. They stood there staring at the ashes that litter the floor. Until the sun set and the wind blew them gently away.
