Author's Notes: This one is going to make your teeth ache.
It was pitch dark when Merlin woke with a start. His phone buzzed again and he fumbled about on the side table before finding it under an open paperback. He squinted at the screen.
“Arthur?”
“Happy Birthday, Merlin!” Arthur bellowed.
Merlin pulled the phone away from his ear but could still hear Arthur’s tinny “Come open your front door!” There was an accompanying flurry of knocking so Merlin jumped out of bed, worried about the neighbors’ reaction to his boyfriend waking everyone in the building up.
He forcefully pulled open the door and Arthur nearly fell inside mid-knock but righted himself and stood on Merlin’s doorstep beaming. “Happy Birthday” he repeated much too loudly for the hour, thrusting a large Tupperware container under Merlin’s nose.
Merlin yawned, pulling Arthur in, shushing him. “Think of the neighbors, you clot pole. It’s one in the morning.” Arthur was pushed down on the couch still holding the box out, smile faltering.
He sighed and sat down next to Arthur taking the box and opening the lid. Inside was a batch of lovingly decorated cupcakes. Merlin squinted at them in the faint glow of the streetlights before switching on a table lamp for a better look.
His heart caught in his throat and he carefully put the box on the coffee table before grabbing Arthur in a crushing hug. “Yes.”
“Oh, thank God. I’m sorry I’m so early. Once I’d finished I was so excited I couldn’t wait.” The beaming was back full wattage.
Merlin let Arthur go and took the box back into his lap. “It’s one of the most romantic things I’ve ever seen. Morgana’s idea?” Laughing, Arthur gave him a little shove.
“Morgana’s kitchen but my idea. I know how much you love sweets.”
“Not as much as I love you,” Merlin answered looking back into the box. He smiled at the piped frosting hearts and MARRY ME spelled out in butter cream.
