Merlin took a large mouthful of his beer and swallowed hard. He knew coming to this party had been a bad idea and wondered for the fifth time in the past hour why he let Gwen talk him into things like this. He glanced across the room to find Arthur Pendragon staring at him, curious smile on his face. Merlin could feel the blush creeping up his chest. Oh, yeah, that was why.
“C’mon, Merlin, truth or dare,” Morgana said again, obviously frustrated with Merlin’s foot dragging.
“This is a stupid game,” Merlin sighed, wrapping his arms defensively around his torso. His crossed legs were starting to fall asleep. “Dare, I guess.”
The dare came so swiftly Merlin knew Morgana had worked it out days or even weeks before, the interfering witch. “I dare you to go sit in Arthur’s lap and kiss him,” she said grinning. “With tongue or it doesn’t count.”
“I’m not doing that. He’ll punch me in the face and then have his cronies punch me some more. I pick truth,” Merlin hissed.
Again Morgana was too quick to respond. “Truth then. How do you feel about my idiot step brother?” Her smile was a lot softer this time, almost sweet. She wasn’t fooling Merlin one bit.
Merlin closed his eyes and blinked a few times taking in a deep breath, hoping to calm the battering of his heart. “I don’t have any feelings for Arthur. We’re hardly even mates, Morgana,” he sighed looking around the living room. “Hell, I’m barely friends with anyone here.”
A chilly hand slid across the back of his neck. Startled, Merlin looked over his shoulder to find Arthur Pendragon at his back. Arthur gave his neck a firm squeeze. “She said truth, Merlin,” and Merlin spluttered in response, wondering what Arthur was up to.
“Truth is, Morgs, Merlin and I have been together since New Year’s,” Arthur said conversationally. “I’m still working out whether to tell father or not.” Merlin gaped at Arthur but Arthur’s gaze was fixed on Morgana, smiling slightly.
Morgana beamed back at them both, obviously relishing the response. “Good. It took you long enough to figure out what you wanted.”
“And too long to admit it,” Arthur said in agreement, hand sliding to Merlin’s shoulder.
Merlin sat, silently wondering what had just happened, Arthur a warm, welcome presence against his back.
