Arthur watched the witch being escorted out of the chamber room, under armed guard. Leaving Arthur, Merlin and his closest knights alone. She had no information to give, claiming that she acted alone. It was a long shot thinking that they hand a lead on Morgana. The lost opportunity to find his sister before she could make another attack on Camelot was disheartening for sure.

“Maybe if we send out another search party, Sire?” Leon broke the silence, but there wasn’t much feeling in his voice, it was a half-hearted attempt at best.

“We could up the training on the knights and guards,” Gwaine tossed in. Which was surprising coming from Gwaine. He would skip out on training if Arthur didn’t visit the grounds daily.

“Or we could make her think twice about her sights on Camelot. I don’t think my magic should be a secret anymore .”

The room went still. Arthur didn’t think he’d ever see his closest knights all wearing the same wide eyed, shocked expression. Each looking at Merlin, then sliding their eyes to Arthur, waiting. But, none of the knights reached for their swords, or restrain Merlin. Arthur knew about Gwaine and Gaius knowing. Lancelot and Leon too, but it seems like his knights might be spreading secrets without his permission.

Pinching the bridge of his nose, Arthur took a calming breath. Great, this was just great.

“Should I even asked how long you all knew, or who didn’t follow a direct order to keep this quiet?”

It was Leon, who spoke up, not at all reacting to the fact that his King had known about Merlin. “I don’t think anyone was told sir. Merlin is always around when you get into trouble. Plus he tries to be careful.”

“So what you are telling me is that Merlin, is as discreet as a elk in the pub?”

“Pretty much, Sire.” Elyan gave the same knowing smile that Gwen flashes when she knew something beyond Arthur’s grasp, “But I don’t think many more people knew. Or he would have be founded out by your father.”

“I guess I should be happy for small favors then. Father would have had your head on a pike if he knew.” Arthur saw Merlin shift uncomfortably under his gaze keeping his eyes down, “My fatherknew?”

“Not exactly.”

“What do you mean by ‘not exactly?’”

“Well...remember when he haunted the castle?”

“No, Merlin did he-”
“No, he tried. He did tried to tell you before you used the horn to send him away. But this just proves my point. It’s too hard to hide-”

“Then you stop doing magic.”

“No Arthur. Do you know how many times I used my magic not only to save your thick headed skull, but each knight here? Or Gaius. Or Gwen. Hell even Morgana when she was still here, before she-”

“Merlin, it’s not safe! I told you I wanted to magic it save for magic again.”

Merlin stood so fast his heavy chair rocked, but didn’t tip over. “And you won't if you keep me tied in how I can help. Yes we need to open our arms to magics like healing, harvest, crafting, and the like. But you need to be able to defend yourself against magic too. Something even your father failed at.”

Arthur gripped the arms of his chair at the mention of how his father died. He couldn't save him, even when he asked for help from magic. Morgana was too determined to kill their father. And she seemed equally determined to kill Arthur for his thorne.

But still, the idea of Merlin risking his neck...he just couldn’t allow it.

“No Merlin. We’ll find someone else. You can help with-”

The sound of both Merlin’s fists hitting the table cut off whatever Arthur was going to say next. He didn’t think he’d ever seen Merlin so exasperated. And he’d seen Merlin argue with him for hours.

“No Arthur. This is something above you or I. Don’t order me to hold back my magic Arthur. Don’t make me break both a promise to a friend and an order from my king.”

Merlin laid it out there, gave Arthur the easy out, to save both their faces, but Arthur couldn’t take it. He had to see Merlin safe. It was getting to become an obsession.

“Sorry Merlin, but I can’t-”

Merlin didn’t let Arthur finish, he turned and walked toward the door at a fast clip. Arthur stood, waving between yelling at his friend, or casing him. “Merlin! where are you going?”

Merlin paused, hand on the door, “Arthur I can’t stay and hear what you are going to say, because I know it already. And I can’t help but disobey what you want.”

Arthur watched Merlin open the door and bolt from the room. That stubborn little nitwit ran from him.
