Author's Notes: Part of my Back!Verse. Sequel to Colors and I'll Come Back When You Call Me. Anthony has always been my headcanon name for Arthur's reincarnated form. Then I read Accidental Memory in Case of Death and it only cemented the headcanon. And I'm late again. Sorry for that. I'll try not to be late next time onwards.
Merlin’s heart is racing when Arthur stops and turns around, his face a mixture of determined and scared.
“How do I know your name?” Arthur asks, but Merlin only partially hears him. Arthur is shining. He’s burning a bright gold and red (like fire, but beautiful. Oh so beautiful). Merlin wants to touch him, wants to embrace him, wants to kiss him and lose himself in strong arms of his King.
When Arthur repeats the question for the third time, Merlin shakes himself out of the daze. “I don’t know,” he says. It’s partially the truth.
“You can stop time,” Arthur says. Merlin’s nods. “Did you do this?”
“I didn’t,” Merlin says before he leaves. He wants to laugh at his cowardice.

Merlin spends the next month avoiding Arthur as much as he can. He runs, despite his resolution to face this. Every time he even gets a glimpse of Arthur, he turns around and makes his way somewhere far away, somewhere safe.
Sometimes he wonders if the reason he’s running is because Arthur keeps following.

“We need to talk,” Merlin hears from behind him and whirls around. Before he has a chance to escape, Arthur is grabbing him and pushing him into the nearest room. It’s a small supply closet and Arthur pushes him against the door, crowds close to him.
“About what?” Merlin finally gets out.
“About what?!” Arthur hisses. “How about the fact that you can stop time? And that I knew your name before I even met you? How about the fact that you keep running away? How about-”
“I don’t know,” Merlin says quickly, just to get Arthur to stop talking.
Arthur takes his hand and writes something on it. He’s stubborn, so stubborn. Just like his king. Merlin wants to weep. It’s only after Arthur leaves that Merlin looks at his hand. It’s a mobile number.

Merlin buys a mobile, and spends two weeks doing nothing before he sends a text.

I’m busy, Arthur.
That’s not my name.

Anthony. That’s what Arthur’s name is. His friends call him Tony. Merlin hates that name. ‘Anthony’s’ middle name is Arthur. Merlin wants to laugh at the irony.
