“I'm not upset, I'm not!”

Mithian smiled wryly at her friend, patting her soothingly on the shoulder. She nodded her head, as if she understood. “Of course you're not, sweetie. But...maybe a little disappointed?”

Elena puffed out her cheeks, ready to refute the claim, but found herself stopping short. She picked at the loose string of her jacket, deliberately not meeting Mithian's eyes. She wasn't upset, not at all.

“Whatever you say,” Mithian said, giving her friend another one of her gracious smiles. “But I'm disappointed in him, at the very least. Honestly, boyfriends are supposed to do the most for these kind of things.”

Elena shrugged, twisting the fabric in her fingers. “It's really not that big of a deal, Mith. I mean, Gwaine and I...we've...really only been dating two weeks, you know? I mean, he did wish me a happy birthday and all--”

“That's not the point, though,” Mithian told her, raising a brow. “He's your boyfriend. He made a commitment to you. And it doesn't matter how long the relationship has been going, he should've done more than just wished you happy birthday and given you a hug.”

Elena, in spite of herself, blushed at the memory. The concept of relationships was still foreign territory for her. She'd never really been in one, up to this point, most boys not really bothering to take notice of her. Elena wasn't unattractive by any stretch of the word, but because Elena was a little more tomboyish than most people were willing to handle, it usually turned people's heads away.

However, a few months ago, Gwaine Sinclair came battery ramming into her life, and soon enough they became fast friends. For a while, Elena has been under the solid impression that Gwaine had a bit of a fancy on her other friend, Morgana. Gwaine had told her as much a long while ago, so Elena had never really allowed herself to consider the two of them in a relationship.

But lo and behold, two weeks ago, Gwaine had surprised her by asking her out. It made Elena giddy with excitement that someone as charming as Gwaine could ever like her, especially after liking someone as beautiful as Morgana prior. It had been two weeks of holding hands and warm, strong hugs that made her so willing to get out of bed every morning, these days.

Her birthday had been today and Gwaine hadn't done anything but given her another hug and a soft, genuine Happy Birthday. Elena really hadn't minded, considering they really had only been going out two weeks, but Mithian seemed to think otherwise, for whatever reason.

“It's really nothing,” Elena said firmly, nodding her head. She most certainly wasn't trying to convince herself of her own words. She believed herself. “I don't mind it at all.”

Mithian's smile changed to a frown, and suddenly Elena wasn't so sure anymore.

The nagging feeling that she should be upset stuck with Elena for a while afterwards. She shifted uncomfortably in her seat, the loud, rambunctious voices echoing around her in the cafeteria.

Just as Elena figured she ought to eat something, since this was her only lunch period, a hand on her shoulder and a voice in her ear beckoned her away.

“Hey Ellie,” Gwaine said to her, and she could hear the smile in his voice. “Come with me, yeah?”

Elena turned to look at him but he was already walking away, his back to her, and shrugging to herself, she got up and followed him, missing the small smiles playing on Mithian, Merlin, and Arthur's lips.

Gwaine finally stopped in the hallway connected to the cafeteria, and she stared at him curiously. A small, ugly little feeling reared its head in her stomach, scared that this was it, that Gwaine would realize what a strange girl she was and decide that maybe she wasn't worth it after all.

He cleared his throat and turned back to her, and only now did she notice the box in his hand. It was wrapped in red paper with a ribbon tied to it...

Elena opened her mouth, closed it, and then opened it again. “What?”

Gwaine just grinned at her, as if he found her clueless question endearing. He shrugged haphazardly, before he handed the box to her.

She eyed it curiously before pulling at the ribbon, watching it come undone. She tore at the wrapping paper until she noticed the lettering on the inside. Elena snorted loudly as she pulled the rest of it off, crumpling it in her hand, before stuffing it into her jacket pocket.

“Poptarts,” she said, almost incredulously. Elena couldn't keep the laughter out of her voice. “What's this for, anyway?”

Gwaine shrugged, his smile softening. “Well, you know, it was your birthday and all...”

Elena sighed. She twirled the box idly in her hands. “You didn't have to...”

“Yeah, I know,” he replied, frowning just slightly. “But, hey? I mean, I am your boyfriend. That's what boyfriends do, right?”

Elena laughed, a little breathlessly, and then Gwaine went on, “And I mean, I felt pretty shitty, knowing I didn't really do anything for you. And I know that, Poptarts on their own don't seem like a lot but--”

“But that's how we first started talking,” Elena finished, grinning broadly. “Over Poptarts.”

“Damn straight,” Gwaine told her, and then cleared his throat. “But, anyway. I'm just, sorry for being late on it, yeah? Two days isn't a lot, but...you know.”

“It's perfect, don't worry,” Elena smiled, and Gwaine looked relieved. But honestly, as if Elena would do anything but forgive him. “Now come here.”

She opened her arms for a hug and Gwaine swooped her off her feet, holding her close. Elena couldn't help but keep laughing, just quietly to herself. If this was the kind of feeling she got for Gwaine trying to reconcile with her, she really would have to get upset more often.
