“Merlin how did your mission go?” Arthur asked, waving Merlin to the empty set next to him.
It was Merlin’s first night back, in the fortnight he had been gone on Arthur’s behalf, and Arthur wasted no time to invite his old servant to dine with him.
Merlin’s hand pause halfway to pinking up the wine pitcher. Remembering that it was no longer his job, pulled his hand back lighten fast, knocking over his empty goblet in the process. Rolling his eyes, Arthur righted the cup before sitting down. He might have changed Merlin’s role in the castle household, but for all his great power, Merlin still looked like the clumsy mansevert Arthur called his best friend.
“It went fine Arthur,” Merlin sat down, looking at the platters, like he was unsure how the food would make itself to Arthur’s plate.
“Really Merlin,” Arthur reached over and spread a hunk of meat with his two pronged fork, “I didn’t stave these last two weeks. Now report.”
“We will have four Druid healers for our new medical house. They will arrive between yuletide and the new year.”
Arthur nodded, please with the outcome. It was quite an ingenious plan, that Merlin came up with. With the help of Merlin and Gaius, Arthur invited healers from known Druid clans to work, healing Camelot’s subjects. The clans would send healers to work and tutor under Gaius, and at the same time would ease the citizens of Camelot into the idea of magic being used again under the approval of the crown.
Healing, being one of the most important magics for the average person, and no time was greater for sickness and death, than the dead of winter. The new year’s celebrations was when Arthur wanted to announced the medical house. Telling his subjects that this was the first step in Camelot to use positive magic as resource.
Their plan was coming to fruit.
“Four clans took you up on your offer, Arthur. Each sending a member with some skills in healing. Three of them are young and still tutoring in their own clans, but jumped at the chance to tutor under Gaius.” Merlin cut his root vegetables into small slices, before eating a bite
“Is the house ready?”
Merlin nodded, hair flopping around on his head. The medical house was built to house the healers and had extra beds for the sick. The last board went into place before Merlin left, leaving the inside to be prepared by Gaius. Knowing Merlin he’ll work overtime stocking the house with herbs, potions and bandages.
“I just a little nervous Arthur, this is a much bigger step than when you changed the trails.”
Arthur knew Merlin had a right to be worried. He had spent his whole life hiding who he was, and Arthur still had been keeping Merlin’s powers a secret from outside their slowly growing circle. This healing house, was not only a move to bring magic back, it was putting a target on Merlin’s back, for people who held his father's beliefs and magic users that still wanted Arthur’s head because of his father’s beliefs.
People like Morgana.
Arthur put a hand on Merlin’s shoulder and squeezed, “I know Merlin, but things are not going to change, unless we make them.”
It was some time shortly after the first of the year, that Arthur opened Camelot’s first medical house. The announcement, made on the new year, was met with open surprise. Some of the knights and nobles were clearly not happy, but when Merlin reported that three child were receiving treatment for a respiratory illness, that would normally claim their lives in the winter, Arthur smiled.
He could deal with some upset nobles, as long as he people were surviving.
