Author's Notes: So much potential with this prompt I actually found it quite hard to pin it down!
A sigh of the wind through the trees could carry a call for help, a broken twig could indicate a fleeing foe or the tracks of a wounded man. Arthur strained all of his senses, hoping for a sign, for anything, for hope. He came up empty.
Merlin had surreptitiously become a fixed point in his life. He was a constant, like breathing and just like when you hold your breath for too long, without him everything felt off-kilter.
Hours passed and reality had begun to seep in when Merlin once again did the impossible.
And took Arthur’s breath away.
