Author's Notes: Merlin’s thoughts during S2E1: The Curse of Cornelius Sigan.

The first thought in Merlin’s head when he saw the shaggy haired man was confusion, and a bit of irritation (neither of them directed toward him).

He’d fixed the saddle himself, checked it twice just to be sure. Clearly, it’s not his fault that the saddle broke when Arthur mounted his fat arse on it. He’s about to say as much when the man who’d sat just out of their direct line of sight appears with the horse Merlin had completely forgotten about. The ensuing events arouse a lingering annoyance in Merlin.

When the hunt almost goes wrong and Cedric takes the praise Merlin deserves, it sets off warning bells in Merlin’s head. He’s more careful after that, but it turns out Cedric is a step ahead of him.

When Cedric lets out all the horses in the stables (because Merlin’s sure that it was him, Merlin is never careless like that), Merlin goes from suspicion to downright anger. And he’s angry at Arthur, too: for believing Cedric, for being so stupid, for not believing Merlin.

In the end, he decides that Cedric is a nuisance who shouldn’t have entered their lives, shouldn’t have tried to come between Merlin and Arthur, shouldn’t have tried to destroy the easy almost friendship they have.

But later, when Arthur is pushing inside him and is pressing soft, almost apologetic kisses on his lips with a gentleness Merlin didn’t think he possessed, Merlin thinks that Cedric was good for something after all.
