Author's Notes: This will probably be my last drabble until nanowrimo is over. Sorry I kind of lamely incorporated the prompt here, but if I did it another way I would have run way over the word count, as in 2000+ words, so I had to cut it out and yeah. I wrote this because I was motivated after watching Parked, which is so terribly sad that I still cry thinking about it (which is what I did after the Merlin Season Finale...I'm still not ready to start rewatching episodes). Well I should probably stop talking and let you guys read! Enjoy, and I'll read everyone's stories tomorrow~

Something New,
Misguided Love,
Somewhat of an Understanding.
Merlin was tired. Tired of life. Tired from sleep deprivation. Tired from, well, everything.
He felt numb, as if all of his emotions were stuff into a dark corner, never to be unlocked again. As if he'd be trapped forever, cowering underneath Mordred's shadow.
Two nights ago, Mordred was worse than he normally was. After Morgana left, Mordred had unleashed his fury. Now Merlin didn't think it was because Mordred had a bad day. Merlin stopped giving Mordred excuses. Mordred had to of felt power when he hit Merlin and yelled out terrible things. Merlin was sure that Mordred had grown addicted to hitting Merlin.
But maybe, just maybe, this is exactly what Merlin deserves. To be hit until his skin was raw and bruised, to be cursed at until late at night, to watch as his abuser drank himself to nothingness, only to be hit again. Mordred was sick in the head.
Merlin just wanted it to end. There were several nights when he tried to take his own life, to escape this terrible reality. But he had always failed, from a knife that was too dull, an empty medicine cabinet, a twisted ankle instead of a broken neck.
A heavy breath was let out at Merlin gripped the sides of the sink in the bathroom and looked at his reflection in the mirror. His black hair was ruffled, and there were purple shadows looming beneath his lifeless eyes. Merlin's lip was split, and it was still bleeding. There was a heavy bruise on his cheek, all black and painful. Will he ever stop feeling this pain?
He turned on the water faucet with a shaky hand and cold water started to pour out. There, he cupped his hands to gather up the water, splashing it onto his pale face. Once he had finished the task and dried his hands, Merlin walked out of the bathroom and headed towards the kitchen to get a bowl of cereal. His stomach growled as flavorless corn flakes piled up into the bowl. Only half a cup of sugar will be able to make him eat the cereal, but there is no more, as Mordred had yelled at Merlin about wasting the sugar. It would have to be eaten plain.
Mordred was sitting in the living room, his chin resting in his hand as he watched the news. "Good morning, Merlin," Mordred said. Merlin hated his voice. It was so smooth, so cunning, so evil. The only thing that he could see of Mordred was his face last night when he stormed into the house and pinned Merlin against the wall upon seeing Merlin hanging up on the phone right when he had pulled into the driveway (Merlin had received a phone call from some relative of Mordred's and had to tell them he was at work)
"M-morning," Merlin hesitantly sat next to Mordred on the couch and started to eat his cereal. He noticed Mordred glaring at him, seeing the damage that he had done last night. Mordred stopped apologizing long ago.
The news droned on in the background. It wasn't as if the sound was quiet, it was actually quite loud. Merlin's thoughts just drowned it out as he focused only on eating his cereal and tried to ignore Mordred's presence. He always felt that When he finished, he set down the bowl and set his eyes on the television. They were talking about a shop on main street being rebuilt after a fire made the building collapse the other day.
Mordred had been looking at Merlin for a while now, and Merlin grew anxious, wondering what Mordred was thinking. Mordred then leaned towards Merlin, his mouth pressing against Merlin's ear. "I am going to leave for work now," He said, "No visitors. And do not answer to make calls on the phone. I don't want to have to teach you another lesson. Do you understand?"
Merlin stared ahead, registering his words. He slightly nodded.
"Do you really?"
"Yes," Merlin whispered.
Mordred leaned back and got up. "Goodbye."
"Goodbye."
Merlin watched him walk out of the house, heard him lock the front door, and waited until the sound of the car faded off into the distance. He got up and looked out of the window to make sure that Mordred was gone. Once positive that he was gone, Merlin got up, and started to look for a phone book.
He didn't want to sit around anymore and stare off into space, wondering what excuse he would be giving Mordred again. No, he wanted to live his life. He missed it, and wanted to be able to not lie to Morgana. He had felt so terrible about lying to her.
And the worst part? She believed him.
She hadn't noticed the look in his eyes, she hadn't noticed him trembling while they were talking. How Morgana could have been so oblivious to his situation, Merlin never knew.
But that was two nights ago, and Morgana couldn't have done anything about it. It was Merlin who had to take action and get himself out of this mess, even though he wished that someone else would do it.
He opened and closed many cabinets and drawers until he found a phone book. He quickly thumbed through the pages in the front for hotlines and found the number for domestic violence. 1-800-799-7233. He quickly read the description below the number:
"Our highly trained expert advocates are available 24/7 to talk confidentially with anyone experiencing domestic violence, seeking resources or information, or questioning unhealthy aspects of their relationship."
Getting the phone, (thankfully Mordred hadn't kept him from using the phone, but hopefully he doesn't look at the history of the phone), Merlin dialed the number and waited. He started to feel a little relieved about finally being able to get out of this situation when someone answered.
"Hello, I'm Guinevere Smith, an advocate of the hotline for domestic violence. Please call me Gwen. How many I help you?" The woman had a lovely voice that calmed Merlin instantly.
"Uh, I'm...Merlin," His lip started to bleed again due to him talking, and Merlin licked the blood off, "I'm calling being I've been abused for a few months and want to get away from my partner. Can you help me?"
"Of course. Can you explain your situation? Are you being physically or mentally abused? Who is your abuser?" Gwen asked.
"I've been...um...physically abused. A lot. His name is Mordred Druiden. I think he has a controlling nature because he doesn't really like me to...do things without his knowing or to have family come and visit...?"
There was a pause before Gwen answered, "And where are you located?"
"I am a resident of America in the state of Washington."
"How peculiar, I live in Washington. Okay, Merlin? I have located where you live at and we will come and put Mordred away in jail. You won't be abused ever again, okay?"
Merlin smiled, "Thank you so much!"
"Ah, one thing though. Do you have a place to live at once Mordred is gone?"
"No, not exactly. My sister lives nearby but she has a full household right now." Not really, but he didn't want to have to bother her again. That's what got him into this mess in the first place.
"This is sudden but I live in the next city over from yours. Would you like to stay at my place until you can get your own? Do you trust me enough for that?" Gwen asked.
That was kind of how Mordred took him in...but Gwen seems so nice, and for real this time. Besides, she would be an abuser. She's working for the hotline! "I-I think so, yeah."
"Good. I'm so proud of you for calling us, Merlin. You're so brave for doing so. I'll be over later on when the police come too. When does Mordred come home from his work?"
Merlin supposed that she knew because she was able to get all the information on Mordred from the internet or some government thing. "Around 7:30."
"The police will be around at 8. I'll be there at 8:30, okay?"
"Okay. Thank you so much," Merlin said.
"You're welcome, Merlin. Goodbye."
"Bye," Merlin hung up. Merlin never thought that he would ever be excited for Mordred to be home from work. Putting the phone back on the receiver, Merlin sat on the couch and resumed watching the television.
