Author's Notes:
A few weeks after Morgana had been defeated, life in the castle started to return to normal.
Giaus was slowly but surely regaining his strength and decided to act upon a decision he’d made some time ago.
He climbed the ladder, picking out books that he thought would be useful and placed them on the table. He sat down to wait, thinking perhaps he’d overdone it, he’d only intended to get a few books down to start with, not the 20 or so piled high on the table.
No matter.
Soon Merlin came in for lunch and glanced at the table piled high with books.
“What’s all this for? “he asked, “Are you researching something? You didn’t get all this down yourself did you, you know you should be resting”
Giaus waved his hands dismissively. “They’re for you”he replied.
Merlin looked through the titles, “Anatomy of the Human Body, Elements of Apothecary” He gave Giaus a strange look “ The History of Medicine? Gaius, What...? “
Giaus conceded to himself that he’d probably overdone it with that one.
“I’ve been watching you in the last few weeks, Merlin. You did very well attending to all those in need when I couldn’t. You’ve got a real talent for healing, with some more study, you could be a great physician one day. You already know all your herb-lore. And you also know that healing magic will not always work without the addition of herbs, potions and salves. Further study will only improve your skill.”He paused for effect. “ So I’m promoting you!”
“From what?”Merlin asked sarcastically.
Giaus ignored him and continued “There’s no better time to start than the present” He slid a book over”
“We can start with the basics, which you already know a great deal of. Also I want you to start attending more patients, there’s no better way to learn than by putting it all into practice”
“But...”Merlin started to say
“I’m sure you’ll be able to fit it all your normal duties as well, if not, well then I’m sure Arthur will understand” Giaus beamed at his ward, pleased with himself.
“Yeah, right”Merlin muttered under his breath, as he sat down and opened the book.
After a moments silence he suddenly asked “Why, why do you want me to learn this stuff now? “
“You want to learn and improve yourself don’t you” Giaus asked
Merlin nodded. “I guess so”
“And I told you Merlin, you are good at this, and I won’t be around forever, Camelot will need a physician when I’m gone, and I can’t think of a better person to take over”
“But you’re getting better aren’t you Giaus, nothing's wrong that you’re not telling me?”Merlin asked suddenly worried.
“I'm fine! but this is the future I’m thinking about. I’m not getting any younger, and I need someone who I know can take over for me”
“I don’t know Giaus”Merlin sighed. “How can I be Arthur’s servant, as well as do everything else and find the time do all of this as well?”
“You won’t always be a servant, Merlin. One day you’ll be recognised for everything you do"
Merlin grunted “Yeah, one day”
“And Giaus told him, “You never, know, one day you may even be known as a great physician, so”he nodded towards the books “Get cracking”
