Now, standing beside Merlin, Arthur felt like the idiot he claimed he wasn’t.
He had come up with the perfect plan. Flowers - that he had Merlin pick from the royal gardens, dinner - chicken from the royal kitchens that he had Merlin bring, and an enjoyable evening with the chilled mead - that he had Merlin steal from his father's personal collection.
He had the perfect plan to woo the person he loved. And it was only now that he had come to recognize the flaws in his plan. Or rather, the one big flaw. The person he loved, the person he was trying to woo, was Merlin himself.
How this was only just occurring to him, he couldn’t fathom. Maybe Merlin’s personal brand of idiocy was infectious.
Thoughts of Merlin brought him back to reality, and he tentatively turned to look at the other man.
And he needn’t have worried. This was Merlin after all.
“This is only just occurring to you?” Merlin was looking at Arthur with an amused twinkle in his eye. “Come on, Arthur. I’m your manservant. Who else was going to set up all of this? I’m just glad you didn’t try to cook the chicken yourself again.”
Merlin shrugged and stepped inside the room. When Arthur stayed where he was, still staring speechless at him, he called out, “Come on, sire. I’m starving.”
Arthur went.
