Hypothetically, Merlin thought, hypothetically, if you’ve waited fifteen hundred years for the love of your life to come back to you, how much time had to pass for you to remember that said love was, in fact, a colossal prat?
Arthur was thrown off-balance by the modern world - understandable - but he was adjusting, and Merlin was patient (and so fucking happy). And it was okay that Arthur didn’t quite get modern technology, or pop culture, or why Merlin kept a cat-
But this was just annoying.
‘You keep taking it off,’ Merlin complained, hanging the framed, priceless, piece of parchment back on the wall.
‘You keep putting it back,’ Arthur grumbled.
‘I like it here.’
‘Well, I don’t.’
‘And why is that?’
Arthur wrapped his arms around Merlin, rather absent-mindedly. He read the poem again, frowning.
‘He was good with words,’ he said eventually.
Merlin shook with laughter.
‘Who, Will? Was rather famous for it, yes.’
‘Well,’ Arthur’s arms tightened around his waist. ‘I’m not.’
‘I don’t keep you around for your linguistic prowess. Or the poetry of your soul,’ Merlin said.
Arthur was offended - slightly - but he relaxed when Merlin settled more comfortably into his arms.
‘So tell me again,’ Arthur said, cautious, ‘how exactly can you be compared to a summer’s day?’
Merlin grinned and proceeded to distract Arthur from his prattish tendencies into a better mood - and then into a really good mood.
He never answered the question. Because honestly, if he could handle all that waiting, Arthur could handle a little jealousy.
