“So, what do you do for a living?”

Lancelot hated been asked this particular question, especially if it was being asked by a potential girlfriend. It was even worse if he was with one of his friends, whether it was Percival, Gwaine, Elyan, Arthur or Merlin. It either added to the stereotype or made the women look at the other men who had more stereotypical jobs.

He contemplated her and asking how much she really wanted to know. He had tried giving disclaimers before, but most of the time it led to the assumption that he was in the closet and made his prospects worse. The woman in front of him looked quite innocent, yet there seemed to be an aspect that she was a bit worn around the edges.

In the end, he decided he couldn’t be bothered with the mind games and long explanations, so he cut to the chase.

“I dance.”

The woman looked him up and down and then asked, “What sort of dancing?”

“Mostly ballet.” He resisted the urge to drink some of the beer he was holding.

She smiled. “Oh really? My brother is a ballet dancer too.”

Here we go. A gay brother she is going to try and set me up with, just great.

“He is a bit younger than me and is always complaining he can never get a decent date.”

Please, no, Lancelot thought and had to take a gulp of his beer this time.

“I don’t understand why though. He has few female friends who are quite clingy with him, yet he assures me they aren’t interested.”

“They probably think he is in the closest,” Lancelot thought aloud.

“Probably,” the woman agreed and then asked, “Do you get that a lot?”

“Pardon?” Lancelot wasn’t sure he heard her correctly.

She took a step closer to him, leaning closer to speak into his ear and over all the noise in the bar. “Do girls think you’re gay?”

That’s what he thought she’d meant. “More often than not,” he said honestly. He smiled warmly at her. Finally someone who understands.

“So you’re not with anyone?”

Lancelot smiled more broadly as he answered her question. “No, I’m not in a relationship with anyone at the moment.”

Her face lit up at the news and he was sure she was single too. She also happened to be quite beautiful.

“Do you dance at all?”

“Yes, but not very well,” she said with a shy laugh.

“There is a small dance club down the road. Would you like a lesson?” he asked, offering his hand.

She hesitated at first, looking down at his hand. When she looked back up at his face, his smile lit up his eyes.

“Sure,” she said and took Lancelot’s hand, allowing him to lead her out of the bar and down the street.
