Everyone assumes Merlin belongs to Arthur.
They’re right, of course. Merlin is Arthur’s in every way possible. Anyone with eyes can see it. It’s there in the devotion that’s so obvious in Merlin’s eyes whenever he looks at Arthur, and in the way he’s simply always there, at Arthur’s side.
What people don’t always understand, is that Arthur belongs to Merlin every bit as much as Merlin belongs to him.
Arthur often wonders how they don’t see it, when he feels like Merlin’s name is etched onto his very being. He thinks they must be blind not to see the way Merlin’s touches are like a brand on his skin, marking him, claiming him.
Sometimes he wants to shout it from the rooftops. He wants people to know, to see that he is Merlin’s, utterly and completely.
It doesn’t matter to Merlin though. In truth, he likes it better this way, because whilst the entire world might see Merlin’s looks of devotion, only Merlin gets to see Arthur’s. The idea of someone else seeing those looks makes Merlin boil with rage, no one else deserves to see Arthur laid bare like that. Only he has the right.
Arthur is his and his alone.
