With a few words and a wave of his hand, Merlin froze Morgana in place. “Before I end your life, tell me why,” he said.
“Why?” she replied.
“I want closure. Why did you turn to Morgause?”
“I begged you for help and you ignored my plea. Morgause was the only one who gave me answers. You could have and didn’t. Why didn’t you help me?”
Merlin frowned. “I was warned not to help you.”
“That old fool.”
“Maybe. I’ll always regret listening to him about you, Morgana.”
A tear trickled down Morgana’s cheek. “I wish you had just told me about your magic.”
“I do, too. I was in love with you.”
“You . . . you were?”
“In some ways, I still am. But all that has to end now.” He lifted his sword.
“Does it?”
“I’m afraid so. But I will give you this.” He drew closer to her and bent down to press his lips to hers. He broke away and said, “Just as sweet as I’d always imagined.”
“Please don’t kill me.”
“I’m sorry, I truly am.” He lifted his sword again. “Goodbye, Morgana. I pray you may find peace.”
