Part 18
Gwen knocked on Morgana’s bedroom door. “Morgana? May I come in?”
Morgana opened the door and let her in. “I was just going through my clothes. I’m going to need everything. There wasn't much call for a nice black dress where I was.” Morgan sat down on the end of the bed.
Gwen sat on the bed next to the open case. “Where did you end up when you left?”
“A small town in New Zealand. I found a job as a waitress and it wasn't exactly easy to make ends meet.” Morgana picked up a sweater and refolded it.
“I never understood why you went so far away.” Gwen tried not to notice the worn look of some of Morgana's clothes.
“Uther had ties all over England and Europe. I didn't want him making my life hell. So I went as far as I could.”
Gwen sighed. “Uther was never a soft touch. I believe he would have hounded you if he could.”
“Arthur has mellowed. I’m surprised that he's so accommodating. I suppose that's your influence.” Morgana smiled.
“I try to nudge him to be a better person than his father. We eloped because Uther was against it. It was the first time Arthur stood up to him.”
“I bet that was something to see.” Morgana picked up another sweater.
“I was so proud of him.” Gwen smiled. “We moved to London after we were married. Arthut came back a few weeks ago after he found out Uther was dying. We decided that I should stay in London until the funeral.”
“I'm sure that made things difficult.”
Gwen looked out the window. “It was.”
Part 19
Arthur leaned against the doorway in the kitchen. “Merlin, I need to talk to you about Morgana.”
Merlin looked up from the vegetables he was chopping. “I know what you're going to say. ‘She's my sister and you're not good enough for her. You'll just break your heart.’”
“Well…” Arthur made a face. “That's not exactly what I wanted to say. I wanted to ask you to be carefull with her feelings. She's not had it easy these past few years.”
“And if I choose to be more friendly with her…?” Merlin put the knife down and turned to face Arthur.
“If you break her heart, I will hunt you down and make you pay.” Arthur took a step towards him. “Painfully.”
“I get it.” Merlin turned back to the vegetables. “I will be a total gentleman.” Merlin grinned. “Until she tells me not to be.”
Arthur groaned and rubbed his face. “Just be carefull.”
Merlin laughed. “You know I will.”
Part 20
“So what happened? “Morgana asked. “I thought Utber would outlive us all.”
“According to Arthur, he was out riding that great black war horse of his and it threw him.” Gwen told her. “He broke his leg.”
“Uther or the horse?” Morgana sat on the bed.
“Uther. The horse was sold.” Gwen shook her head. “All the horses were sold. Uther wasn't going to be able to ride again after that. His leg was shattered. While he was in hospital, he had a stroke.”
“That explains the state he was in when I arrived.” Morgana put the sweaters aside. “It still hasn't sunk in. I didn't think I would be back here… well….ever.”
“Arthur said as much.” Gwen looked at the mantle clock. “Dinner will be soon. I need to go find Arthur and see what we're doing tonight.”
“I should put on a frock for dinner.” Morgana pulled a blue floral dress from her suitcase. “We may be in mourning but we should keep some of the customs of the gentry.”
Gwen looked at her clothes and nodded. “I should change too.” She stood. “I'll see you later.” She headed out the door.
Morgana watched her go, then she looked at the floral dress in her hands. “Appearances are everything.”
Part 21
Gwen found Arthur in their room. She sat down next to him on the settee.
“How's Morgana?” Arthur asked as he took his wife's hand.
“Unsettled and a little anxious. I don't think she's convinced you are not your father.”
“I need to be better. He just threw her away like she was nothing. She needs security and support.” Arthur shook his head. “How do I reassure her, Gwen, when she's been hurt so much by someone who should have loved her without question?”
“You prove it to her by your actions.” Gwen leaned her head on his shoulder. “You show her she is valued and loved. You've made a good start but there is more you can do.”
“I know.” Arthur sighed. “There's a complication. Merlin fancies her. It must be the magick thing.”
Gwen chuckled. “No Arthur. It's a man and woman thing.”
Arthur frowned. “How can you be so sure?”
“A woman knows.” Gwen kissed his cheek. “When she settles down, she'll see it too.”
“Poor Merlin. He's doomed, isn't he?”
“Oh yes, but he'll be happy about it.”
