After Merlin packed up camp in the morning, he stood at the top of the hill overlooking Camelot and sighed. Even in its less-than-perfect state, it was a stunning sight for him. This was where he had made true friends, found a father figure, and learned how to fully use his magic. “It’s beautiful,” he said.

“It is deeply flawed,” Kilgharrah replied.

“Well, yes, but it will always be beautiful to me.”

“Hmph.”

“Well, shall we go down into it?”

Kilgharrah nodded. “That is your quest.”

“Do you want a ride?”

“I think I will walk.”

“All right.”

They walked down the hill and down into what used to be the lower town. Merlin touched a crumbling wall and shuddered at its chill. “I’ve never seen this place so empty.”

“Decay is inevitable,” Kilgarrah said.

“You’re cheerful this morning.”

“Would you be cheerful if you had been imprisoned here for over twenty years?”

“You have a point there.”

They peered in every crumbling house and former business. At one point, Merlin stumbled and nearly tumbled to the ground. “Don’t fall,” said Kilgharrah, “who knows what secrets the earth may hold?”

“Right.”

It was midday when they reached the gate to the citadel. Kilgharrah looked up at the still-imposing structure and said, “Perhaps you should explore the citadel alone.”

“Alone? I’d be lucky to cover all that in two days alone. No, you’re coming with me.”

Kilgharrah grumbled, but he followed Merlin’s lead through the rusted gates.
