Arthur groaned, but kept lying still on the bed while Merlin tended to his wounds. The prince's back was a mass of bloody lacerations and ugly bruises. His fight with the bandits had been brutal.
"You're usually such a clumsy oaf, Merlin,"Arthur wheezed, speaking to take his mind off the pains. "How come you have such a sure and soft touch when tending to my ailments?"
"I focus. I don't want to cause more pain, I want to ease it and to heal you."
"You do a good job."
"Thank you. But I hope you know I'd rather spend time polishing your armour."
"Well, that puts me in my place. You value my armour more than me?"
"Of course not, Arthur. I care very much for you, when you're not being a massive clotpole, that is."
"And yet...?"
"I hope you'll wear your full armour the next time you confront a group of ruffians. After that, the armour will be dull and dented and in need of much polishing and repair."
"Indeed."
"But you will be safe and whole, and that's all that matters. Please don't do this to yourself - and to me - again. My heart can't take it."
