As Merlin and Gwaine drove toward Percy’s Refinishing, Merlin said, “Gwaine, let me do the talking. Unless it’s obvious that I need help. Then feel free to step in.”
“Gotcha. You’ve got all the experience.”
“Yeah, and all the responsibility. I just hope he’s receptive.”
“Me too. Because I don’t want to be on his bad side.”
Merlin shook his head. “Me either.”
When they arrived at the shop, the first thing they noticed was how neat and clean it was. “Well, at least he’s consistent over time. His chambers were always neat, too.”
They walked over to the receptionist, where Merlin spoke. “Hello, we’d like to speak to Percy about a project.”
She smiled up at them. “Sure! Let me see if he’s free to talk. Feel free to have a seat over there.” She pointed to a grouping of comfy chairs then walked through a door they assumed led to the workshop.
They got comfy on two of the chairs. “Hopefully we can do this in private,” Merlin said. “It would be quite dicey if we had to do it in front of the receptionist.”
“Yeah, that would not be the best option here,” Gwaine replied. “Oh, here she comes.”
The receptionist made her way over to them. “He’s nearly done with his current project, so he’ll be free in a few minutes, if you don’t mind waiting.”
“Not at all,” said Merlin.
The receptionist walked back to her desk. Merlin and Gwaine chatted for a while until they saw Percy come through the door and walk over to them. They rose and Percy held out his hand. “Percy Bigler, how can I help you?”
Merlin and Gwaine shook his hand and introduced themselves. “Is there somewhere private where we can talk about a project?” Merlin asked.
Percy smiled. “Sure. Let’s go to my office. This way.” He pointed out another door and led them through it. There they found a desk and a few chairs. Percy sat behind the desk and indicated that the other two sit, which they did. “Now, what’s this project you have in mind?”
“It’s been a group effort so far, but now we need your help,” Merlin said. “You see, we need your help to complete the group. You may not believe this, but King Arthur is returning, and I’ve been gathering his inner circle, and you’re the last piece of the puzzle.”
Percy threw his head back and laughed. “You think I’m what? One of Arthur’s noble knights? That’s just a myth, you know.”
“I assure you, it isn’t,” Merlin replied. “In fact, Gwaine here is one of Arthur’s knights too.”
“It’s true, mate, it’s all true. And Merlin here knows magic because he was the Merlin from Arthur’s day. Show him, Merlin.”
“All right.” He muttered a few words and snapped his fingers. The lights in the room went out. He pronounced a few more words, and with another snap, the lights came back on.
“You didn’t move,” said Percy.
“No, I didn’t,” replied Merlin. “I can do more. I can bring back your memories of Arthur’s day, if you want. You can choose whether to help us or not.”
“You really are that Merlin.”
“Yes, I am. We were friends before, Percy. Let’s be friends again.”
“What do I need to do?”
Merlin smiled. “Nothing at all. I’m just going to touch your hand and incant another spell. You’ll pass out for a few minutes, but when you wake up, you’ll remember everything.”
“All right.” He rolled his shoulders and stretched his neck. “I’m ready.”
Merlin reached out his hand to Percy’s. He incanted the words to the spell and watched as Percy’s eyes lit up then dim as he fell unconscious. He and Gwaine chatted while Percy slept, and after about twenty minutes, he woke up.
“It’s all true. How are we here again?”
Gwaine grinned. “Reincarnation, mate. Magic returned us to life for a reason.”
“What’s the reason?”
Merlin spoke up. “Arthur is returning soon, and he needs our help to fight off a coming evil.”
“Do we know when he’s coming or what it is we have to fight?”
“No, just that it’s going to take all of us to fight it.”
“Who are the rest?”
Merlin grinned. “Well, besides me and Gwaine, there’s Gwen, Elyan, Lancelot, and Leon. They can’t wait to meet you.”
“I can’t wait to see them, too. When can I?”
“Tonight, as a matter of fact.”
“Wonderful!” Percy’s face clouded over and he looked at Gwaine. “Mate, I’m sorry I couldn’t save you. Morgana had me tied up, if only I’d gotten free sooner.”
“Don’t worry about it. I’m not sure there’s anything you could have done.” They clasped arms and reached arms behind each other for a half-hug.
Percy then looked at his watch. “I hate to break this up, but I’ve another appointment in a few minutes. What time are we meeting and where?”
“At seven at my house. What’s your mobile phone number?” Percy told him and Merlin typed it into his phone. “I’ll text you my address and add you to the text group.” He smiled. “Percy, it is good to have you back in the fold.”
“It’s good to be back. See you tonight.”
