Darkness (Part 5)

Merlin awoke with a start. Something was wrong. He sat up and looked around. Arthur was staring at him from a log by the dying campfire.

“Bad dream?” Arthur asked.

Merlin rubbed his face. “I… it must have been. Why are you awake? I thought Elyan had the second watch.”

“I can't sleep.” Arthur picked up a stick and stirred the embers. “You keep telling me I am the great king of prophecy that will unite the kingdoms into one great land but I don't know how that will happen when I can't persuade the woman I love to marry me.”

“Wait.” Merlin joined Arthur on the log. “I thought that she had already agreed.”

“She did but she thinks we should wait.” Arthur threw the stick in the fire. “She thinks we need to wait for the mourning period to end before we marry.”

“Arthur,” Merlin grinned, “l think she's right.”

Arthur glared at him.

Merlin held up his hands. “Look. She wants you settled before you marry her. It makes sense.”

“I thought that when I became king I would make my own rules.” Arthur sighed. “I guess even a king must follow the rules.”

Merlin nodded. “Yes you do.”

A noise behind them caught their attention. They both turned slowly to see two eyes glowing like embers from the edge of the woods.

Darkness (Part 6)

Arthur drew his sword as he stood. He raised his sword to defend himself.

Merlin picked up the sword by his bed roll and held it in front of him. He knew it wasn't going to matter if the creature was the same one that burned the village.

The creature growled and hissed. Its eyes blinked shut and the underbrush rustled as it ran away.

Arthur lowered his sword. “Merlin, what the hell was that?”

“I don't know.” Merlin stuck his sword in the ground. “Whatever it was, I think it was the baby of the creature that burned the village.”

“Shit!” Arthur sheathed his sword and turned to face him. “You think there's two of them?”

Merlin nodded. “Two or more. If it was the creature that burned the village, it would have killed us and not retreated.” He looked at the sky. “It will be daylight soon.”

“We can track it back to the mother.” Arthur sat back down.

“Then what? You kill them both?” Merlin started getting the supplies to cook breakfast.

“Well, I doubt the creature will offer to make amends for destroying an entire village and its people.” Arthur stood and gathered the water skins by the fire. “I’ll fill the water skins. I have no intention of bringing your burnt body back to Gaius.”

“Thanks.” Merlin chuckled. He followed Arthur in his mind's eye to the creek just in case the smaller creature had not cleared the area. When he saw Arthur on his way back, he continued with the breakfast preparations.

The scroll in his pocket made sense now that Merlin had seen the creature at the edge of the woods. There was nothing Merlin could do. This time Arthur would go through this alone.
