Darkness (Part 4)
When they reached the village, it was nearly nightfall. It was an eerie sight. The burned beams and stone walls stood silently in the shadows. There was no sound and no breeze either.
Arthur dismounted and looked around. “We’ll camp here. Not in the village. Leon, take the first watch. Gwaine, you and Elyan, come with me.”
“Arthur, you should wait until morning.” Merlin commented as he tied up the horses.
“Don't worry Merlin. Percival will protect you.” Arthur slapped Merlin on the shoulder. He won't let anything kill you. Hopefully….”
Percival grinned as he untied his bed roll.
“I'm just saying you should proceed with caution.” Merlin put up his hands. “But you never listen to me so….”
“I just want to see if there are any survivors.” Arthur sighed. He drew his sword and started walking to the village. “Just a quick look.”
Gwaine winked at Merlin. “A really quick look.”
Merlin frowned and nodded.
Arthur checked a few of the houses and stood confused. He sheathed his sword. “This isn't normal. If the fire was hot enough to burn these buildings, the trees should have been scorched at the very least.”
“Dragon?” Elyan poked at a burned barrel with his sword.
Arthur made a face. “It's the only possible explanation. I have no idea where it could have come from. I thought that I killed the last one some time ago.”
“What else could breathe fire?” Elyan picked up a scorched stone.
Arthur shook his head. “I don't know. Gwaine! We’re heading back.”
Gwaine came away from the barn he was looking into and met up with Arthur and Elyan. “All of the livestock is gone. No carcass. Just gone.”
“Eaten or taken?” Elyan frowned.
Arthur drew his sword again as he walked back to camp.
Gwaine and Elyan exchanged worried looks.
Merlin saw the look on Arthur's face as he walked into camp. His mind flashed to the message on the scroll. He looked down into the pot on the fire. He would have to tell him but … not yet.
