Merlin Had A Feeling

There was something going on around Camelot for the last week or so. Merlin was sure of it but he could put his finger on what it was exactly. It was just a feeling he couldn't shake.

Merlin was alone as he cleared away the supper dishes in the empty dining room. The knights had left early for the tavern and Authur had headed off to go over reports. It was odd that everyone had left so fast. Usually, they lingered. It was also strange the knights had not invited him to join them, not even Gwaine.

Merlin sighed then carried the heavy tray of dirty dishes to the kitchen. Even the kitchen was empty at this time of night. It was starting to make him jumpy.

Merlin took off his coat to scrape the plates before he washed the dishes. He jumped as someone tapped him on the shoulder. He turned to face Gwen.

“Merlin, what are you doing?” Gwen asked.

“Slaving away. I didn't hear you come in.” Merlin grinned. “When did you get so sneaky?”

Gwen shrugged. “Leave those for the kitchen maid and come have a late supper with me.”

Merlin shook his head. “I gotta get back. Gaius….”

“Is probably asleep.” Gwen smiled. “I won't take no for an answer.”

“Fine.” Melin grabbed his coat and followed her. After a few minutes, Merlin realized that they were headed for the tavern. “Gwen, when did you move into the tavern?”

“I need to ask Elyan a question and I need to catch him before he's too drunk to answer.” Gwen didn't look him in the eye.

Merlin raised an eyebrow at Gwen’s obvious lie but he continued to follow her.

As soon as Merlin went through the door, the entire tavern erupted in a cheer. The knights started clapping and whistling.

Merlin grinned as he realized he had been set up. He thought no one had remembered his birthday.

“Surprised, Merlin?” Arthur handed him a tankard of ale. “Did you think we forgot your birthday?”

“Ah, that's why the lot of you have been acting so strangely.” Merlin waved to the knights. “I knew something was going on. I'm surprised you all could keep it from me.”

“They were under royal order to stay silent.” Arthur chuckled. “Being King has its advantages.”

“Hmm. Thick as a bunch of thieving bandits. That's what you all are.” Merlin took a sip of ale and realized something. “Gwen reminded you, didn't she?”

Authur glanced over at Gwen. “She may have mentioned it.”

“Arthur, we both know that she did. She does it every year.” Merlin patted Arthur on the shoulder as he headed for the cake.

Arthur frowned. “I am capable of remembering things.”

“Sure you are, Sire.” Merlin chuckled as Gwen handed him a big slice of cake. “As long as Gwen is around to remind you to remember.”
