Merlin glanced at Kilgharrah then reached for his phone. “Hello, this is Merlin.”

“Merlin!” It was Gwen. “I’m sorry I didn’t call last night. It was late when I finally got off work.”

“It’s all right, Gwen. What can I do for you?”

“One of our knights is here.”

“How do you know that?

“I just have a feeling. He’s a regular, so I know he’ll stay about half an hour.”

Merlin smiled. “All right, I’ll come check him out. Is there anything else I should know about him?”

“He teaches at one of the local schools and fences in his spare time. And Merlin, it’s Lancelot.”

“Oh wow.”

“I’ll chat him up a bit so maybe he’ll stay a little longer, but Merlin, hurry up.”

Merlin grabbed his keys. “I’m already on my way.” He disconnected and turned to Kilgharrah. “Do you want to ride along for this one?”

“No, I will stay here and wait for you. I foresee a nap in my future.”

“Sounds good to me. See you later, maybe with two knights.”

Merlin left and drove to the coffee shop. He found Gwen talking with a man, but he couldn’t see his face. When he entered the shop, they both turned to look at him. The man was, without a doubt, Lancelot. No wonder Gwen had had a feeling about him.

He walked over to their table when Gwen waved him over. As he sat, Gwen introduced them. “Merlin, this is Lance Dulac. Lance, this is Merlin Emrys.”

“Good to meet you,” Lance said, shaking Merlin’s offered hand. “Merlin, just like the wizard, huh?”

“Warlock,” said Merlin. “Sorry, but that’s the correct term.”

“Okay,” said Lance. “Gwen said you wanted to meet me. Is there a particular reason why?”

Merlin glanced at Gwen. “Could we go back to your break room?”

“Sure. I’ll need to man the counter though.”

“That’s fine.”

Lance looked over at Gwen. “Gwen, what’s this about?”

“Merlin has something mind-blowing to tell you. Follow me.”

“Good thing it’s not a school day,” Lance said as he stood up.

“I wouldn’t deprive you of your time if this wasn’t worth it,” Merlin said.

Merlin stood and followed Gwen and Lance toward the break room. Once there, she said, “Good luck,” and left.

Merlin closed the door behind her. “Lance, I need to tell you something, but it won’t be easy.” He motioned to the sofa in front of them and said, “Won’t you sit?”

“All right, but you are testing the limits of my patience here.”

“I understand. You probably won’t believe me, but in your previous life, you were one of King Arthur’s knights, and I need you to remember that.”

“This is crazy. I’m leaving.” He tried to stand, but Merlin was quicker. He laid his hand on Lance’s face and chanted the spell. Lance’s eyes rolled back, and he slumped back onto the sofa.

“Sorry, old friend. I wish there wasn’t a way this was crazy,” Merlin said. He sat back and waited for Lance to regain consciousness.

After about twenty minutes, Lance began to stir. “Merlin?”

“I’m here, Lance.” He reached out and clasped arms the way they’d done back in Camelot, and pulled Lance up to sit. “Do you remember?”

“I remember all of it.”

Merlin winced. “Including how you died twice?”

“Does Gwen know about that?”

“Not exactly. We will need to discuss it though. I’m sure she’ll forgive you, though. After all, it was Morgana’s doing, not yours.”

“Did she ever marry Arthur?”

“Yes. He did forgive her.”

Lance nodded. “Good. Now, why did you need me to remember my previous life?”

“Arthur is returning.”

Lance whistled. “Wow. Do you know when?”

“Sometime within the next six months. And he’ll need his knights to help combat what is coming.”

“What is that, exactly?”

“We don’t know.”

“’We’?”

“You, me, Gwen, and my dragon-cat Kilgharrah.”

“Dragon-cat?”

Merlin shook his head. “That’s not important now. Listen, are you free tonight?”

“Yes. I’m free.”

“Good. Let’s meet at my house. Hand me your phone; I’ll put in my number and address.”

Lance handed his phone over and watched Merlin type in his digits. “Thank you.”

“Of course. I’ll answer all your questions tonight, and hopefully Leon will be there too.”

“Leon? Does he remember yet?”

“No, I’m going to go over to his workplace and wake him up.”

Lance frowned. “Is that the only way to do it?”

“If afraid so.”

They stood. “Merlin, my friend, it’s good to see you again,” Lance said.

Merlin grinned. “Likewise. Hey, go easy on Gwen, yeah?”

“Will do.”

Merlin got up and left, Leaving Lance to contemplate what he’d just been through.
