In retrospect, I shouldn't have done this as a teeny drabble. I enjoy the challenge of cutting it to exactly 100 words, but this subject matter deserved a longer treatment, I think.
I actually envisaged this as the moment when Arthur finally confronts Merlin about his mysterious absences, instead of just accepting every ridiculous excuse he comes up with. But I don't think I gave myself enough to space to really deal with that.
I've always felt that Arthur has every right to be angry when he finally finds out about Merlin. I think Merlin has gotten so used to keeping secrets that he has missed opportunities for honesty. And because he has to keep his magic a secret, he winds up making a lot of decisions for Arthur. They may have been the right decisions, but they were still choices that Merlin basically took out of Arthur's hands. I really should have explored that more, instead of making this a 100-word week.
