The title was not one Merlin personally coveted, which was probably for the best; if there had been any honours to bestow for being the world’s least skilful swordsman, he would likely have swept the lot, as Arthur saw fit to remind him often. Yet, as he watched Leon kneel before the king and swear his oath as First Knight, he couldn’t help but feel a small twinge of jealousy. Perhaps he could have done without the knighthood, but Arthur’s regard and the beaming smile that he conferred on his oldest friend were two things Merlin would always yearn for.
