Author's Notes: I had a few bunnies floating around, but limited time and unexpected events saw this blossom.

“Press call already, would you?” Gwaine said leaning over Merlin’s shoulder.

He knew everything. He was the only person Merlin could talk to these days. Lancelot had left the country to pursue some noble cause in a remote location on the other side of the world, so he was not contactable most of the time. Gwaine had done a good job of filling the void though.

“It’s not that simple,” Merlin replied.

‘Of course it is,” Gwaine insisted. “Just use your finger to apply pressure.” He grabbed Merlin’s hand and tried to force his finger on to the right spot on the touch screen of Merlin’s phone. Merlin resisted as best he could but Gwaine was too strong. His only mistake was to let go of Merlin’s hand after his accomplishment. This allowed Merlin to hit ‘end call’ before it had a chance to finish dialling and move away from his friend before he had a chance to try again.

“I’m quite capable of pressing call of my own accord, thank you. And I will do it when I’m ready.”

“And when will that be?”

Merlin sighed. “I don’t know.”

Gwaine shook his head. He knew how head over heels in love Merlin was and by the way they interacted, he was pretty sure Arthur felt the same. The problem was, neither of them was openly gay.

Everyone knew Arthur swung both ways but Gwaine was the only one who knew for certain that Merlin was in fact gay. Most of their friends suspected but Merlin had never confirmed nor denied the rumours.

“What’s the worst that could happen?”

Merlin turned to glare at Gwaine. “Honestly, like you don’t know.”

“So he rejects you and your friendship is ruined. It’s not the end of the world. It happens to a lot of people.”

Merlin just continued to glare.

“Oh, come on Merlin. There is no way he is going to reject you. He you seen the way he looks at you?”

The glare turned into a soft smile.

“See!” Gwaine gloated.

“But what if he doesn’t want to have a relationship with me? What if he wants a family, with kids and all? How can I ask him to give that up for me?”

“Merlin, now you a being ridiculous.” Gwaine walked over to where Merlin was and placed each of his hands on each of Merlin’s shoulders. “Is that really what you are worried about?”

Merlin looked down at their shoes. Gwaine shook his shoulders until he had eye contact again.
“If Arthur loves you. Wait, no. There is no if. Arthur loves you and I’m sure he wants a relationship with you and he probably will want an heir at some point, but same sex couples have choices these days. Society is different to what it used to be. You’ll work it out.”

Merlin knew Gwaine was right. “I know… but-“

“But nothing. Call the man already, before I do.”

Merlin pulled his phone back out of his pocket where he had put it so Gwaine would have more trouble getting it. He brought up Arthur’s number then hovered his finger over the screen before pressing it to make the call.

Gwaine listened intently with his ear to the other side of the phone.

“Arthur Pendragon,” Arthur said when he answered on the third ring.

“Hi Arthur. It’s Merlin.”

“Hey, what’s up?”

“Not much. I was just wondering if you’d like to have dinner with me tonight?”

“Sure,” Arthur answered happily. “What time and where?”

“I’m not fussed,” Merlin replied. “You choose.”
