Peace and Quiet
Their horses ambled along at a slow pace. All around them there was bird song. Green foliage shimmered in the sun. A pleasant breeze whispered, and they heard the bubbling of a nearby brook.
"Ah, these lovely, lazy summer days," Arthur mused, cheerful contentment in his voice. "We must cherish each one. Finally some peace and quiet."
Merlin smiled and nodded, opening his mouth to respond. But before he could utter a word, there was a wild yell from the forest, immediately taken up by many more voices. "It's the prince! After him! The High Priestess will pay us well. Get him!"
A small horde of outlaw bandits came crashing through the underbrush towards the two riders. Roaring as they advanced, the ruffians were all brandishing swords and axes.
Arthur and Merlin didn't linger to evaluate this sudden threat. Whooping loudly, both gave their steeds free rein, urging them on to full speed.
The wind whistled in Merlin's ears as he lay flat out along his horse's neck. "Peace and quiet, you were saying?" he called in Arthur's direction.
By his side, Arthur laughed delightedly. "Who needs peace and quiet? I'll take challenge and excitement any day of the week!"
