“I know you did it,” Merlin said.
Alice turned to face him. “Did what?”
“I know you poisoned Uther.”
“I, poison Uther? That is ridiculous. How would I do that?”
“You have that little monster in your room. The manticore. I saw you talking to it.”
Alice laughed. “Manticores are a myth. There is nothing in my room. You can look for yourself.”
“I already have.”
“You trespassed in my room?”
Merlin frowned. “My room. And yes, I went in there. I searched your box.”
“And did you find anything in my box?”
“No. But that proves nothing. It could be hiding elsewhere.”
Alice laughed again. “You’ll never be able to prove I did anything. And Gaius will defend me, so don’t go running off to him.”
“I’ll find it, just you wait. And when I do, I’ll destroy the foul little thing.” With that, he turned on his heel and left the room. He’d find a way to expose the creature, he just had to.
