Venting
"I swear, everyone at court's an idiot half the time! Lance, I'm sure you know this, but there's really no end to the stupidities here. It's so infuriating! The inanities I've had to witness while keeping a straight face. Take that time Edwin Muirden came to Camelot..."
On occasion, Merlin's stress and frustration became overwhelming. That's when he'd seek out Lancelot for a trip down to the Rising Sun and a secluded corner table. Lance knew about his magic. Merlin could be completely open and frank with him, it was such a relief. And once Merlin had downed a pint or two, it was time for a bit of venting.
"Edwin Muirden? Who's that?" Lancelot asked, helping Merlin along in his tale.
"He was a sorcerer. Practiced dark magic. Creepiest-looking man I ever saw. Came to Camelot and insisted he was a physician with a remedy to cure all ills. Obvious nonsense, unless he had magic, yet no one called him out on it. He used his sorcery to make Morgana dangerously ill, and everything just went insane. You wouldn't believe how gullible Uther was! How that man managed to rule a kingdom, I have no idea. And Arthur was bloody clueless. They let him into Morgana's chamber on his own, she was unconscious - he could have done anything! And when he'd miraculously cured her, no surprise there, he made Uther send Gaius away. Gaius actually just yielded and made ready to go. He, who never gives up! It was mayhem, I tell you, the way all of them lost their minds."
Gulping ale down his parched throat, Merlin finally gave Lancelot the chance to get a word in edge-wise. "What about Gwen? Did she believe this Edwin?"
"No, now that you mention it, she was suspicious and uneasy," Merlin admitted. "But what could she do, when the royals and everyone else was acting bonkers and being thick as so many bricks?"
"Not everyone? Surely you kept your wits about you and saw right through him, Merlin?"
Merlin grimaced. A blush rose to his cheeks.
Lancelot grinned. "He fooled you, too? I'm actually rather relieved to hear it. Please cut us mere mortals some slack, Mr. Powerful Sorcerer. We're none of us infallible."
Merlin laughed, the tension suddenly draining from his body. He gestured weakly with his mug. "I hear you, Lance. Let's drink to that."
