Merlin was out driving around. He was hungry for something; he just didn’t know what. Then he passed it-a shawarma place. He immediately flipped an illegal U-turn and parked on the opposite side of the street from the shawarma place. Looking in the mirror, he checked to make sure his blond wig and glasses were in place. Smiling at himself, he got out of the car and carefully crossed the road.

The bell on the door dinged as Merlin opened and closed it. Behind the counter was a bored-looking woman, but she was gorgeous. She looked up and said, “Welcome to the Shawarma Shack. What can I get for you?”

Merlin looked up at the menu. “I’ll have your Sam Special.”

“Coming right up.” The woman called the order to the kitchen then looked up at him and squinted her eyes. “Do I know you from somewhere?”

Merlin chuckled. “I get that all the time. I just have one of those faces, I guess.”

The woman gave him an assessing look. “No, I’m pretty sure I know you from somewhere.”

Merlin grinned. He was getting rather nervous now. Most people had quit trying to place him by now, but this woman wasn’t giving up. “Why’s a gorgeous gal like you working in a place like this?”

“Oh, well, student loan debt, you know.” She grinned. “But I don’t think you need to worry about something like that, do you, Merlin Emrys of All the King’s Men.”

Merlin’s smile fell. She’d figured him out. “How did you know?”

“It was the way you smiled. You always smile like that when you’re onstage, soloing.”

“Are you going to tell anyone I was here?”

“No, I think I’ll keep that to myself. If I was you, I’d go out in disguise too. Big fan, by the way. But I’ll keep your secret for a price.”

Merlin groaned. “All right. What to you want? My shirt, my hat . . .?”

The woman laughed. “No, I think that would further expose you. Here, sign this for me.” She handed him a napkin. “Name’s Morgana, by the way.”

“Morgana, hmm? All right, Morgana, you have a deal.”

While he fetched his marker from his pocket, she walked to the kitchen to pick up his shawarma. She watched him write then gave him his food when he finished. He pushed the napkin toward her and said, “Thank you.”

“No, thank you.” He turned to leave and she blurted out, “I work weekday nights from five to ten.”

Merlin turned back and grinned. “Good to know.” He then left, leaving a grinning Morgana behind him.
