Arthur let himself into his pristine flat, shrugging off his suit jacket. Rather than hanging it up on the hook, however, he let it fall to the floor. He knew that the other resident of the flat disapproved, and it was a certain way of making him appear. Sure enough, a small tut sounded directly in the young man’s ear and Arthur grinned as hands skimmed over his shoulders with a feathery light touch.

“Merlin…”

“Shh.” The arms encircled him, loosening his tie and undoing the top few buttons of his shirt. They then slipped inside, grazing over his chest and toying with him slightly before disappearing completely. As the door to the living room swung open on its own accord, Arthur knew what was expected of him and quickly headed towards it, toeing off his shoes as he did so. They were left in the middle of the corridor as he practically threw himself down on the sofa, eyes wide and hopeful.

“Please…”

“Not tonight. You need rest.” Despite Arthur trying to protest, despite the fact that he was arguing with everything he had left - which admittedly wasn’t a lot after a long day at work - Merlin remained firm. Arthur was pressed into the sofa, a warm weight covering him as arms were wrapped around his middle, holding him gently.

Just as he thought he was comfortable enough to fall asleep, the hands started wandering, soft lips pressing against the skin of his neck as his shirt was teased open even further. Arthur simply grinned, knowing that he had managed to get his way after all. The shirt wasn’t the only thing to be undone as his trousers shifted down his legs softly as Merlin set to work.

It never took long for Arthur to come completely undone when he was treated like this. Yet it was only when he finally stopped panting and managed to peel his eyes open did he realise that the warmth had vanished and his clothes were back in place. Even his tie was done up properly, almost as if nothing had happened.

“Merlin?”

Silence.

“Merlin?!” There was a hint of desperation in Arthur’s call now as he sat up and stared around. “Don’t leave me! Please!”

But it was too late. Merlin had already gone. Been taken from him almost the second they had met in this life time. Arthur had had just long enough to remember who the gangly man that had just crashed into him was before the bullet had ripped through the air and tore Merlin from him again. This time, it was Arthur who had to live out the lifetime alone, memories from the past and tantalising thoughts on the life they could have had together this time around being just enough to almost drive him mad.

As the door shut again, trapping the heat in the room and beginning to warm Arthur up, he sighed even as he hugged a cushion to his chest. Maybe he wasn’t quite alone as he thought, maybe Merlin was still around? In fact, he was certain of it, for he was sure that he could feel a ghostly hand stroking his hair gently as Arthur gave in and fell asleep.

If it meant going mad, then Arthur didn’t care. At least he still got Merlin that way.
