Oh, I love this! Merlin's grief was so heartbreaking until the wee bit of hope at the end. I hope he finds his wishes have come true when he reaches the lake.

Thanks so much. I've been writing a lot of fluff so I had to balance it with some angst. I think Merlin would grow more and more desperate as the years past.

If 'angst with a hopeful ending' was a term, this would fit that bill perfectly. I hope that lake visit isn't in vain.

You have such a way with words, D. "the stale air of centuries ground to dust", for instance - what evocative imagery!

Honestly, I thought of just leaving it without hope but I do love a hopeful ending. Thanks about the imagery. At one time, I thought about being a poet but that would take too much work! Still, my favorite author is Mary Stewart and her imagery is amazing.
