“You will not be with a boy and nothing will change my mind, Arthur!”
Uther had said these words years ago in anger and all he ever did with them was that Arthur did it secretly. He snuck out of the house, he never brought anyone home anymore and he never told him what he had been doing when he was ‘out with friends’.
When he realized he couldn’t just change who his son was, he had started taking care that Arthur was safe and had the staff provide appropriate measures that just showed up in Arthur’s bathroom drawer or wherever he turned to for such things.
He had watched closely as Arthur had crushes and got his heart broken but lately, he was different. It was as if he couldn’t get the smile off his face and he was talking to someone on the phone for hours at night.
Maybe it was time to chance his stance? All he wanted was for Arthur to be happy. And if this made him happy…if this someone made him happy…who was he to be in the way? Wouldn’t he much rather participate in Arthur’s life and not be an outside observer?
While he still pondered how to go about it so it wasn’t too obvious, he just passed the front door as the door bell rang. He could have waited for a servant to open it, but that was ridiculous, even for him, so he went to get it.
Outside stood a tall young man with dark, impossible hair and sticking out ears. He had a friendly, yet nervous smile and warm blue eyes.
“Yes?”
“Oh…err…hello. Mr. Pendragon? I’m Merlin…is Arthur ready?”
Uther just heard Arthur jumping down the stairs and then freezing half-way to the door.
“I think he is,…Merlin.” Stepping back a bit to give Arthur room to leave, Uther couldn’t help but notice how Arthur’s face lit up when he saw the young man.
Arthur stopped a quick moment to throw him a sideways look. “Erm…bye?”
“Bye, you two.” Watching as Arthur followed Merlin to a car that had seen better days, Uther shrugged. “Have fun!”
When Arthur paused for a moment as he was getting into the car and threw him another look, he realized that he probably had never told Arthur to have fun with anything. Oh well, he would have to get used to it.
Just as he would have to get used to the presence of the boy behind the wheel that leaned over to press a kiss on Arthur’s lips before he turned the keys.
