Merlin carried a blanket with one arm and held Morgana’s hand with the other hand. She had no idea what this date was all about and he loved it. He was about to let her in on the secret though.
“Are we almost done hiking?” she asked.
“We haven’t even come very far,” he replied, “you can still see the car! But we’re going to stop here.” They stopped and he unfolded the blanket, laying it over the sparse growth of the meadow. He sat down on the blanket and patted the spot next to him. “Sit here.”
“All right.” Morgana sat.
“Now lay back.” Merlin demonstrated.
Morgana raised an eyebrow at him, but did as he wished. He took her hand and pointed up at the sky, where the bright blue was interrupted here and there with thick, cotton-like clouds. “We’re cloud watching.”
“Cloud watching?”
“Yeah, haven’t you ever just looked at the clouds and thought about what shapes they were?”
“No, Uther would have thought that was wasting time.”
Merlin rolled his eyes. “I feel sorry for him. Anyway, that’s the point of this date-to find shapes in the clouds.”
“Okay. Find shapes in the clouds.” She pointed at one at their feet. “That one looks like a mushroom.”
“Hmm, I’ll give you that, but you can do better.”
“Fine.” She searched the sky for a bit. “That one looks like a rabbit.”
“Good. I think it looks like a dog, but to each their own.” He grinned.
They spent the afternoon like that, pointing out the shapes in the clouds. When sunset came, they sat up and watched the sun sink into the horizon. When it was gone, they stood and Merlin picked up the blanket.
“Thank you for a fun date,” Morgana said, taking hold of his hand again.
“You’re welcome.”
“Let’s do it again sometime.”
“I agree. It’s a date!”
