When Merlin was little, he and Will took bits of bark, loaded them up with dead beetles, flowers, or dandelion fluff, and float them down the creek. They pretended that their boats were off on adventures, fighting pirates, meeting the most fantastical creatures. Voyages of happy possibilities.
They would hurry back, laughing about their escapades. Hunith always smiled at their excitement, ruffling Merlin’s hair.
But years later, heart-broken, sending Arthur-whom he loved above all others, into the unknown, the boat vanishing into the mist, he couldn’t help wondering whatever happened to his younger, naïve self. And mourn the loss.
